Single of the Week: New Mood / LPX

I’m desperate for exhilarating music these days. Every bit of information out there is draining the soul, and some days it feels like we will never have good news. One of the few things that has turned that around for me lately is the latest single from LPX, “New Mood.” This song is ferocious. This song is angry. This song is also optimistic and perky has hell. This is one of those songs that forces you to take whatever is hurting your reality (which is the pandemic that’s hurting EVERYONE IN THE WORLD), and forces you to squash that and take your life back over. This song is vital listening for anyone that needs to escape the hell of now and get motivated to live.

God bless you, LPX.

“New Mood” is the first single off LPX’s upcoming, as yet untitled EP, due out this Summer. You can listen / buy this track here, and don’t forget to follow her on Twitter and Instagram to get up to do info on preordering what may be the soundtrack to your Summer.

Single Of The Week: Something by Avataria

Avataria is the alias of Niki Avataria, a musician from Philadelphia, PA. She’s been putting out excellent singles for a number of years now, but she’s been on a roll lately with fine EPs. “Something” is the first single off her forthcoming EP, Inside Out, due out June 5th. This is an anxious number that helps encapsulate that feeling of wanting all of this to be over and for us to make it through the chaos of today safe and sound. Is that the writer’s intent? I have no idea, but this song feels like a warm hug that both say, “I totally get what you are going through, and I want the same. And, you know what? I think we are actually going to be fine. It’s just tough right now, and it’s really hard to stay patient.”

Inside Out can be preordered through Bandcamp, or if you are more of the “streaming” type, you can get your resave situated right here

Single Of The Week: Take Back The Radio by Katy J Pearson

I have an obsession with songs about music. I also have an obsession with big, bright songs that build into a crescendo of pure joy. “Take Back The Radio” by Katy J Pearson gives you both of these things. This is the song I most needed to hear today, the song I needed to motivate myself to make things, to get productive and make the best out of the situation that is the here and now. Pearson has the perfect Stevie Nicks quiver, backed by a wall of sound reminiscent of 00’s Flaming Lips, AIR, or Mellow. This song will be on repeat over your headphones as it is mine, too.

“Take Back The Radio” is a stand alone single and can be streamed in all the usual places. You can also head over to Bandcamp to purchase any of her singles, or some Merch! Also, remember that Bandcamp is waiving their fees for all purchases today, as well as the first Friday of June and July this month, so every penny you spend goes straight to the performer.

Singles Of The Week: forever by Charli XCX / Phenom by Thao and The Get Down Stay Down

I wanted to avoid any Singles Of The Week that were connected to the pandemic currently devastating the world. However, two singles dropped this week that bring the quarantine front and center. Those are “forever” by Charli XCX and “Phenom” by Thao and The Get Down Stay Down. Both songs are great, and both relevant for different reasons. Single Of The Week: Get Better by Mates Of State

Forget all your politics for a while
Let the color schemes arrive
Come onboard, it’s a curious sight
Absorbing sound that’s never been right
Never ahead of, never behind it
Occasionally guarded, just keeps us surrounded
It’s luck
Everything’s gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better
Ah
I propose a less serious boat
But don’t mistake it for a party of jokes, who are never ahead of, never behind us
Floating in circles there’s more to remind them of less
Everything’s gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better

Single Of The Week: MIORATA by dodola

Sometimes, the cure for what ails you is simply  a massive guttural scream. This week, “MIORATA” by dodola is the exact guttural scream that releases the tension. This track comes off of the dodola’s self-titled debut record recently released on Bandcamp. It’s a 10 track beast of a record that assaults the senses, while occasionally opening up for a breath. However, the peace is always balanced out by increased intensity. This has been a rough week for the world, and what better way to end it than with a dose of pure sonic catharsis.

Single Of The Week: Young Buck by Braids

Calgary, Alberta experimental pop trio, Braids have been quiet for the last five years. Instead of resting on their laurels, they’ve been working hard at producing their 4th full length record. And, if  the lead single, “Young Buck,” is any indication, this is going to be their most accessible record yet! However, they haven’t gone completely soft. This might be their most emotionally complex piece of lyric yet. The accompanying video is also a potent piece of film!

Shadow Offering, the latest full length LP from Braids hits all the usual places on April 24th. You can preorder online here!

Their North American tour kicks off June 3rd! Don’t miss one of the most intense live experiences of your life!

Single Of The Week: Backyard by Personal Trainer

This week’s Single of the Week comes from Personal Trainer. This is the debut single from this power trio based out of both Philadelphia AND Brooklyn. (Odds are that there is some infighting about which town has the best pizza) This track starts out sounding deceptively simple, but builds into a delightful aural treat that spans an insane amount of emotions on 4:18. This song is a stunner, and I can’t wait to hear more from this band.

“Backyward” can be found on Soundcloud and Spotify. You can also follow the band on Instagram and Twitter to stay in the know when they put out more material.

Single Of The Week: No Gifts For Nazis by Alice Bag

Not enough people have been talking about Alice Bag’s big comeback. One of the original LA punks, she was featured prominently in the original Decline Of Western Civilization  before leaving music to focus on activism. Jump to 2016 and she put out an amazing new record, and then another, and now she’s got the perfect Christmas single! For those living in England, it’s probably a really good day to blast this one as loud as you can.

Alice Bag will be sharing the stage with fellow Decline.. veterans Circle Jerks, as well as Bikini Kill, Plastic Bertrand, Carbonas, Bleached, Panty Raid, and many, many more at Burger Boogaloo in Oakland on July 10th-11th. You can still get special early bird tickets NOW! These are going fast and make great Christmas gifts. Just please don’t buy them for any Nazis.

Single Of The Week: Feast by Bridal Veil

Bridal Veil are a band out of Portland, Oregon, and they recently put out their first EP, Morpho. We’ve selected their track, “Feast,” as our single of the week! The track opens with some swirling recorder, only to take you into some of the best dream pop I’ve heard since 4AD’s heyday! Lead singer Emily Overstreet’s voice weaves in and out of swirling guitars in a way that feels perfectly calculated for maximum serotonin release of the brain.

Morpho can be purchase on Bandcamp,  or streamed in all of the usual places!
