I wanted to avoid any Singles Of The Week that were connected to the pandemic currently devastating the world. However, two singles dropped this week that bring the quarantine front and center. Those are “forever” by Charli XCX and “Phenom” by Thao and The Get Down Stay Down. Both songs are great, and both relevant for different reasons.
Thao Nguyen has been slowly elevating the funk in her records for a number of years now, but nothing has prepared me for just how rock solid this groove is. This is a party song, one that screams to be heard in a live setting. Which makes it all the more impressive that she managed to film a video with for a song this big and groovy using Zoom, including some mighty impressive choreography. This is a feat of filmmaking, and I’m thoroughly impressed with the resourcefulness employed in such a short amount if time. This is the second single coming off Thao’s upcoming record Temple Of My Familiars, due out May 15th. Preorders happening NOW! They are also due to play The Fillmore on June 27th, provided we all due good with social distancing and keep the spread down, we can make this show happen! So, PLEASE buy tickets, wash your hands, wear a mask, stay six feet away from other, and let’s make sure we can end this nightmare SOON so we can go to shows again.
Our second single comes from one of the brightest and boldest minds on modern pop music, Charli XCX. Suddenly off the road and stuck in quarantine, she’s using this time to create a whole new record, titled how I’m feeling now, as a collaborative work between her and her fanbase. The first single, “forever” is a stunning song that manages to be both noisy and chaotic at the same time. There is a warmth, but also an aggravation and fear in this track, perfectly encapsulating how I feel right now, and I thank her for giving us this track. how I’m feeling now is due to drop in the digital landscape on May 15th, as well. Making for one great new release day coming up!
