Somehow, in the many years I’ve been doing this column, we haven’t awarded IDLES with the Single Of The Week prize. THAT CHANGES THIS WEEK! Amazingly, the politically charged UK punk band gives us a song that’s just plain fun? I genuinely appreciate music and dancing, and it’s warm and fuzzy and fills me with great joy.
“DANCER” is the first single off IDLES’ upcoming full-length record, TANGK, coming to you on February 16th. Preorders and such can be found here.
This was an intense year… It feels like we’ve lived 300 in the last 3 months, TBH. Anyways, here’s the Top 20 records of 2021 as voted by the staff at Spinning Platters. You may notice a couple of late 2020 releases here… Similar to the Grammy’s, we don’t do a typical calendar year. Instead, we do 11/20-11/19 as a year. After two long years, the mighty Idles finally made their appearance at the Warfield Thursday night as part of their “Beauty From Ashes” tour. While mainly a celebration of being able to tour again, it’s now also a de facto album tour for their upcoming album Crawler, which drops this Friday, November 12. Arriving at the Warfield with singer Joe Tablot proclaiming his foot to be “fucked,” how would the band and crowd celebrate being together after such a long break? What a shit year, am I right? I guess that’s the consensus all around. It was also a weird year for music… The first half of the year had a bunch of great records that were released with touring in mind, full of epic live songs that are meant to be heard in a crowd and that simply didn’t happen. The second half was full of intense projects made while in seclusion. Projects where the recording is really the only means of connecting. This was a great year for the art of the album, despite it being a terrible year for musicians to make a living. Which is why we are giving you a top 20 this year! A lot of independent artists mixed in with the big ones, so please buy a record or two, or some merch to help keep them alive and able to hit the road when it’s safe.

I do not get out to enough concerts. I work in live theatre which means when I’m on a “show run” I’m locked in with only Monday nights off for the next two months of my life at a time, so I have to fit in whatever I can between plays. Therefore, it’s almost serendipitous that the first show I’ve been to since May happens to also be an IDLES show, this time at The Wiltern in Korea Town.

As I get older, I have to admit that I really appreciate having a barricade to shoot photos from. I get that it’s not most audience member’s cup ‘o tea, but when you’re lugging around 5k worth of camera equipment it’s nice to not have to worry quite as much about being shoved around by rabid fans.
