10 Quick Questions with Robynn “Cup” Iwata from cub

Long ago, I was a teenage punk. I did not have a ticket to the final Ramones show at The Warfield, and didn’t have any tricks yet for getting into a sold out show. My friends and I waited a bit, and eventually got a flyer that said “Free All Ages Punk Show at Trocadero Transfer: The Queers, cub, The Potatomen.” This was a key show for me. I bought a cub / Potatomen split 7″ and cub became one of my very favorite bands. The record they were touring was Come Out Come Outwhich has become a twee punk classic. Mint Records has recently released a 30th anniversary remaster of this classic jam(buy it here), and we got to talk with Robynn “Cup” Iwata, the band’s guitarist as well as a member of Bay Area experimental legends I Am Spoonbender, and once part of the highly influential and legendary record store, Open Mind Music.

1.) Things have been quiet with cub for a long time. What made you folks decide to get together for this reissue after all that time apart? Continue reading “10 Quick Questions with Robynn “Cup” Iwata from cub”

Film Feature: Carrie’s Top 10 Films of 2025

With Oscar nominations announced in just a few short weeks on January 22nd, Spinning Platters closes out the year by weighing in with our own Best Films of 2025! Check out fellow critic Chad Liffmann’s Top 20 here, and read on below for my Top 10:

10. BOB TREVINO LIKES IT

Way back in March, I boldly predicted that this understated but powerful film would secure a spot on my Top 10 list. Despite the many outstanding movies that followed since then, I always remembered this well-told, empathetic story about loneliness, unexpected connections, and found family. Released early in the year, the picture seems to have been forgotten at awards time, which is unfortunate. It deserves a wide audience.

Film Feature: Chad’s Top 20 Films of 2025

What a sneaky good, but not great, movie year. 2025 was full of major blockbuster disappointments (Mickey 17, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tron: Ares, The Running Man, Wicked For Good) and a few five-star masterpieces. But there was a plethora of three-and-a-half to four-star fare, some good and some great, that made moviegoing a memorable experience. The honorable mentions will be many this year, but here’s my ranked list of the twenty best films of 2025:

20. FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES

The sixth film in a series is rarely, if ever, as good as, if not better, than all previous installments. Bloodlines refreshed the ‘90s horror franchise in inventive new ways, killing off a plethora of death-cheaters.

19. THE NAKED GUN

Pure comedies can still be good, and still make money! The reboot of The Naked Gun had some of the funniest lines of the year, and produced the rare pleasure of joining in raucous laughter with a moviegoing audience. Continue reading “Film Feature: Chad’s Top 20 Films of 2025”

Every Kid Gets An “A” When They Can’t Remember Most of The Music From 2000 and 2001 Like An Amnesiac

The clocks turned to 12, and everything stopped.  Yes, it was Y2K (and Kremlin Joe for you Futurama fans) that stopped everything. Y(orke)2k. Nobody cared about any of the music that came out “in the year two thousand” (Conan fans) because we were all on the Radiohead forums discussing what unreleased, once played as an encore, unbelievably interesting and oddly structured because I only heard it on someone’s mixtape that I couldn’t get a copy of, the song was going to be on the next Radiohead record. Just thinking about writing this list, I went a good five minutes before I could even name a record that came out prior to Kid A on 10/2/2000.  But that was only half of it! The earth-shattering news on the album’s press release was that it was only part one! They had written so many songs they had enough for two albums! Amnesiac came out some seven months later. Because of that, and maybe because everyone kept saying the new millennium didn’t technically start until 2001, the two years will forever be jumbled in my brain as one, especially when it comes to music.

So, here we are. 11 years after I wrote my list of my favorite albums of 1999 (it was such an experience that I needed more than a decade of restorative meditation), to celebrate the 24th and 23rd anniversaries of both records, it’s time to compile the list of the best albums of 2000 and 2001! Film Feature: Chad’s Top 20 Films of 2024

It’s been an odd year for movies, partly due to the lasting effects of labor strikes. There are very few masterpieces, and just as few disasters. Instead, 2024 featured a lot of solid 3-3.5 out of 5 star films, a healthy selection of entertaining fare that enabled the theater industry to finish the year far ahead of what many analysts had feared (box office-wise). Well, without further ado, here’s my ranked Top 20 best films of 2024 (and don’t forget to check out Carrie’s Top 10 Films of 2024 as well):  Continue reading “Film Feature: Chad’s Top 20 Films of 2024”
