On October 24th, 1993, my uncle brought me out to see my favorite band, Belly, as an early birthday present at The Warfield. I was *just* about to turn 13, and it was tradition for us to be taken to our first concert by our uncle. (My sister, a few years earlier, was treated with REM on the legendary Green tour. We are all pretty nerdy kids.) That was literally 30 years ago. Since then, I’ve probably gone to 100s of shows at The Warfield (especially since I worked there for a spell), and live music has essentially been a cornerstone of my life ever since. However, I wasn’t expecting to return to the place where it all started, WITH the band it started with, in time for that anniversary. On top of that, they would be supporting The Breeders! The Last Splash is a record that I know by heart, and although I never got to see them in their original go around, that record was one of my initial “Buy 5 for the price of 1” BMG record club picks! Single of the Week: “(So Far From) Silverlake” by The Loyal Seas
The Loyal Seas’ debut record, Strange Mornings In The Garden, was one of our most anticipated releases of 2022 LONG before a single note of this project was released. For those who missed our interview with them last year, this is rock n roll legend Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses, The Breeders) and underground hero Brian Sullivan (Dylan In The Movies), who happened to be best friends. This song is a warm hug of a ditty about, well, that very same friendship and what it means when you live on opposite ends of the country.(At least, that’s my interpretation as the listener) It’s insanely relatable since we are in year 23 of this pandemic and I haven’t seen friends that live across town since March 2020. In short, I don’t know if you needed to hear this song today, but I REALLY NEEDED TO HEAR THIS SONG TODAY. So, thank you Tanya & Brian.

Remember how I said a few weeks ago that I’m the 1st season of “How Did I Get Here?” was over? Well, I lied. I didn’t lie, but I had the opportunity to snag the very first interview with The Loyal Seas. Who are The Loyal Seas? They are a bit of a supergroup featuring Bay Area-based indie veteran and all-around really lovely person, Brian Sullivan, aka Dylan In The Movies and Tanya Donelly. Yes, the Grammy-nominated Tanya Donelly. Founding member of not one, but THREE of the most groundbreaking bands in rock history: Throwing Muses, The Breeders, and Belly. We got to talk about friendship, struggling to get your music heard, the logistics of having a transcontinental band, and a lot more. I even asked a very specific question about a moment that happened at a Belly concert in 1993, and, sadly, that moment is missing from the internet. You can literally watch the whole show except the part we talked about.
