Single Of The Week: “IDK WTD” by Human Touch

Oh, man! This was such a lovely surprise this morning to see that Natalia Rogovin’s Human Touch project is back! “IDK WTD” is such a blissful lofi synth gem that has dramatically lifted my spirits today. This song is just plain perfect- it’s warm, it’s catchy, and it moves in several different directions. Rogovin is singing in a different register than she did with her band Social Studies, allowing her to bring out a different emotional range. And I know you’ll hear it, but I’m a sucker for the perfect “crack” in a song, and her voice cracks in a way that simply sends my heart aflutter.

I’m hoping this is a sign of more to come. “IDK WTD” is available everywhere. Keep an eye out on Human Touch’s Instagram page for more (I hope).

Show Review: Big Scary, HIPS at Bottom Of The Hill, 5/16/14

HIPS is a new project from Drew Denny of Big Whup, Natalia Rogovin of Social Studies, and Christina Gaillard of Crown Plaza. A few minutes on HIPS’ Soundcloud page and one can pretty easily discern that this project has very little to do with any of these bands. They advertise themselves as doing “DANCE JAMS // GRINDING // LATE NIGHT DRIVES // MAKING OUT.” I’ve never heard music that immediately conjures up the image of making out on the back of a van late at night while driving through a forest before I heard HIPS, but these ladies have managed to do just that.  Continue reading “Show Review: Big Scary, HIPS at Bottom Of The Hill, 5/16/14”

Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 4/3/14-4/9/14

Being performed in it’s entirety this Saturday Night at The Warfield

The week is the first official week of Fauxchella. There is plenty to look forward to, including a healthy dose of Coachella bands that you can see without the threat of sunburn, and only limited threat of somebody on Ecstasy deciding that you have the prettiest hair in the world and they need to pet it for 45 minutes while you watch The Cult.

Spinning Platters is helping you decide which noisey pop you will be enjoying during Noise Pop!

Noise Pop can be intimidating. It’s the best week of live music programming in the Bay Area, and sometimes it’s hard to decide what to go to, because you can’t always be in two places at once. (However, I will be going to two shows on Friday night. I’m a bit insane.) So, if I were deciding what shows you were going to, this is what this shows would be. Disagree? Well, you can decide for yourself by checking the schedule out here. Continue reading “Spinning Platters Tells You What Noise Pop 2014 Shows To Go To”

Happy Birthday, Micaela!

Last Monday, Spinning Platters had the opportunity to present the final night of Social Studies’ 4 week residency at Brick & Mortar Music Hall. Our own Editor In Chief, Gordon Elgart, entertained the crowd between sets as in house DJ, and we enjoyed sets by garage rock locals The She’s, who introduced us to their new bassist that night, a blistering set of psych from Ash Reiter, and, of course, an hour long set of old and new songs from Social Studies. For those who missed it, here are a few pics from the show, taken by the fantastic Kara Murphy.
