The festival’s darlings came in the form of Heartwatch. They really got the crowd dancing as opposed to lazing on their picnic blankets and set the tone for the rest of the day. Catch them at Outside Lands, coming up next month.

They say it takes a village when it comes to the care and well-being of a child. A playground is also a bonus. Props to the very talented and kind Yoshi Kato for helping with my precocious little daughter while I took moments, here and there, to capture photos of the fifth annual Phono del Sol Music and Food Festival.

Held at Potrero del Sol, known for its skate park and generally idyllic weather (compared to the rest of San Francisco), this afternoon to early evening jaunt featured an eclectic mix of bands and local food trucks. It’s a volunteer-driven affair, so the sound wasn’t the best. Still, that didn’t dampen the mood as many fans gathered, mingled, and danced under the sun this past Saturday afternoon.

The Official List of the Best Albums of 2014

Picking a list of our Top 10 albums has become quite the task here at Spinning Platters. Every year, we share a gigantic playlist with each other, made up of albums nominated by our entire staff. For 4-6 weeks,  it’s the only thing I listen to. Sometimes we find a new favorite album, and other times we find ones we actively root against. Top 10 Outside Lands 2013 Acts From the Bottom Half of the Poster

Whenever the line up for a big festival is released, everyone is always talking about the headliners. However, there are a lot more than just the headliners performing. You have nearly 100 bands performing over the course of three days, and there is a good chance that there is an amazing band in the bottom half of the bill that you will love, but you’re going to miss. Don’t do that. You paid your $250. You should get your money’s worth. Come out early. (Also, the food lines are so much shorter before 3 PM)

SXSW Review: The Best & Worst of SXSW 2013

Now that we’ve all had time to recover from a week’s worth of sun damage, get our voices back, and forget about the hours spent driving through the lonely west Texas desert, it’s time to reflect upon another year of SXSW. While everyone’s experience is different under the Austin sun, these are my recollections as to the best and worst of SXSW 2013.

This BAMF is coming to town this week to help kick off the holiday concert season. And that’s pretty much it for big holiday shows this week. (J/k guys, Sufjan is coming too.)

Show Review: Times New Viking, King Tuff, Spencey Dude and The Doodles at Rickshaw Stop, 6/14/11

The headliner at the Rickshaw Stop on Tuesday night was supposedly Times New Viking, the Ohio based shoegaze band touring in support of their latest release Dancer Equired, but nobody informed the audience because the majority of them were there to see the denim jacketed, Crass t-shirt wearing King Tuff blaze through his 11 song set of mind altered sixties garage rock without give one fuck about those critical darlings Times New Viking who were there to close out the night.
