Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 7/26/12 – 7/31/12

Coming to Brick & Mortar!

This week is heavy on the world music… Maybe it’s time that you took a leap and tried something completely new? It will be quite good for you.

Thursday, July 26th

King Tuff, Jaill, The Coathangers at Bottom Of The Hill

Not only is King Tuff one of the most charismatic performers in rock & roll, he also produces some great garage rock records. Fuzzy and catchy, just the way god intended it to be!

Harry & The Potters, Potter Puppet Pals, The Home Alones at Slim’s

Friday, July 27th

The Dirty Projectors, Wye Oak at The Fox Theater – Oakland

When The Dirty Projectors for came onto the scene, they were a “difficult” experimental band. Throughout the the years, however, they’ve managed to hone their craft and evolve into something truly unique and brilliant. In 2009, they released an album called Bitte Orca, which, in my own humble opinion, was the best record of that year. The recently released Swing Lo Magellan manages to exceed it’s predecessor in every way. They are also a killer live band, and this show at The Fox will be amazing.

The Memorials, The Sheshen, Mission Bells at Brick & Mortar Music Hall

Saturday, July 28th

Fiona Apple, Blake Mills at The Fox Theater – Oakland

Sure, I wish Fiona Apple would put out a record every two years, and tour all the time. Sadly, we will never get it. So, here we are, 16 years after her debut, Tidal, swept the world, and she is finally on her 4th album.  Expect this one to top everybody’s best of the year list!

Hamsa Lila, Fanna-Fi-Allah Sufi Qawwali Party at Great American Music Hall

Sunday, July 29th

Barbary Coast Burlesque at Yoshi’s – SF

This one seems obvious to me.

Monday, July 30th

The Psychic Paramount, Phil Manley: Life Coach, Barn Owl at Brick & Mortar Music Hall

Looking for a beautiful psychedelic noise? Look no further- this band bridges the gap between contemporary instrumental rock, 60’s psych, and experimental noise. Earplugs will be mandatory this evening at Brick & Mortar.

Tuesday, July 31st

Luisa Maita at Yoshi’s SF

This singer/songwriter from Brazil is quite impressive. She brings bossa nova rhythms and fuses them together with and folk music sensibility, creating something that’s equal parts fragile, intimate, and danceable.
