Show Review: Dream Wife with Buzzed Lightbeer at Bottom Of The Hill, 9/20/23

There’s nothing more exciting than realizing you’ve reached “fan” status with a band. And after picking up Social Lubrication, followed by their 2020 live album IRL, I’ve gone officially “all in” on the political dance punk stylings of Dream Wife. My turntable has pretty much alternated between both discs all year, reminding me that I need to pick up the two earlier records so I don’t wear out the other ones. This show has been on my calendar for most of the year, and it was also my return to Bottom Of The Hill, one of the most magic venues on the west side of SF Bay.

HOW DID I GET HERE with Rakel Mjöll of Dream Wife

Rakel Mjöll is the lead singer of the UK punk band Dream Wife. This conversation was witty and full of positive, inspirational energy. Also, nothing has made me want to get drenched in shared sweat at a rock show more than this chat. Dream Wife’s third full-length, Social Lubrication, is available to preorder here and is in stores on June 9th. UK Fans (or those willing to pay more for shipping than the cost of the album) can get one of the few remaining extra-creepy gel-sleeve editions of the album here. (UK Fans coming to the US after this ship and looking for a present for me? This is a good option.)

Tour Dates can be found here, and once again, I’d love to dance with you at Bottom Of The Hill on the 20th of September!

New Music Videos from Blondshell and Dream Wife

Remember when Tuesdays were the “New Release Day” for music? Those days were special. Although I think moving it to Friday is a little more fun. That being said, two videos dropped today from two of my favorite finds of the year!

Going in alphabetical order out of fairness…

BONUS Single Of The Week: “Orbit” by Dream Wife

Remember in 2021 when I kept posting Wet Leg singles, and they ended up becoming the biggest thing in 2022? Well, every single off Dream Wife’s third record, Social Lubrication (Out June 9th), has been incredible, and I think there is a reasonable chance that 2023 will be the year of Dream Wife. “Orbit” is a dance-punk piece of infectiousness that you will listen to on repeat until the next single drops.

Also, they dropped a small assortment of US dates that you can see below. And if you happen to be visiting the UK from the Bay Area in June and can pick me up a copy of this version of Social LubricationI’ll pay you back when you return to the States.

September 15 – Brooklyn, NY, USA @ Brooklyn Made

September 17 – Portland, OR, USA @ Mississippi Studios

September 18 – Seattle, WA, USA @ Barboza

September 20 – San Francisco, CA, USA @ Bottom Of The Hill

September 21 – Los Angeles, CA, USA @ Zebulon

Single Of The Week: “Hot (Don’t Date A Musician)” by Dream Wife

I try to avoid picking multiple singles off the same album for “Single Of The Week,” but I damn, Dream Wife are fantastic. “Leech,” the first single from Social Lubrication (due out June 9th!was a pretty passionate and angry song that hit all the right feels for me at that moment. “Hot (Don’t Date A Musician)” is a driving rock number that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Something that’s VITAL. It’s hard to find the fun in life sometimes, and this song doesn’t it nicely.

Don’t forget to do all the “pre-” things to ensure proper listening enjoyment when Social Lubrication comes your way in June!

Single of the Week: “Leech” by Dream Wife

Fun Fact- I had a different Single of the Week picked out for this week. I wrote it up and decided I was done. It was the debut solo single from The Raincoat’s Gina Birch. Then I landed upon “Leech” by London’s Dream Wife. This track- a throbbing post-punk anthem with heavy poetry from vocalist Rakel Mjöll that breaks out into a near scream without giving you the catharsis of a full scream- is addictive magic. If the full length is half as potent as this single, we’ve got a serious contender already in the queue for the 2023 Album Of The Year.

You can enjoy “Leech” in all of the usual places. Obviously, I’m going to keep going down this rabbit hole, and if my fellow American does the same, maybe they will pay us a visit next year?

Single Of The Week: Hasta La Vista by Dream Wife

Dancing is super hard right now. I, personally, have had a hard time moving at all for the last six weeks. I’d never thought I’d be jealous of running errands, but I am. This track, “Hasta La Vista” by Dream Wife popped up in my inbox, and I put it on, and it helped me feel like I can remove myself from all the pain and suffering of the world right now, and just feel a warm, steady groove. This light and bouncy, bass driven groove calls to mind the brightest cuts from Erase Errata, with just enough of a pop sheen to feel like you can put it on for anyone, at anytime.

“Hasta La Vista” is the second single off their forthcoming release So When You Gonna… which is coming out July 3rd. Preordering / Presaving can be done here. Also, since touring is out of the cards for a bit, Dream Wife have launched a podcast centering around amplifying womxn in music. You can stream the first episode of that here!
