It’s insane to me that The Dandy Warhols have been doing their thing for 30 years now. Even crazier is the realization that I’ve been along for the ride (pun intended) for roughly 27 of those years, first seeing them at The Fillmore opening for The Charlatans UK and coming back with zero memory of the headliner. That night, while my friend was desperately trying to stalk Courtney Taylor-Taylor (with limited success), I tripped over Zia McCabe, and she signed the back of my poster. Why not the front? Because I’m an idiot. But she was incredibly kind and remains probably the nicest person in rock. Continue reading “Show Review: The Dandy Warhols’ 30th Anniversary Show at Bimbo’s 365 Club, 12/6/24”

Show Review: Wet Leg at Bimbo’s 365 Club, 3/29/22
If you’re reading this on Spinning Platters, chances are this isn’t the first time you’re heard of Wet Leg. I’ll spare you the lengthy gushing and simply say that Rhian Teasdale speaks in plain terms about modern life with idiosyncratic idioms with a deceptively blasé elocution. Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts: 11/6/14-11/12/14
Post-Election Day we have a panoply of excellent concerts coming to The Bay Area this week. Shows of all kinds. We have shows that are avenging! And dance-y! Secretive! And lemony! Metal! And even including the magic of public transportation.
It’s wonderful that there are so many kinds of shows ’round here and so many buses to take you to them.
Here’s what’s coming up this week. Continue reading “Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts: 11/6/14-11/12/14”
Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 8/15/13-8/21/13
Recovering from Outside Lands has been, well, tough this year. However, much like a hangover, you really just need a little more music the next morning to feel normal again.

Show Review:The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Thee Oh Sees at Bimbo’s 365, 9/29/10
I recently started law school and as a result have been staying away from any sort of fun. This week has been a break from the grindstone I’ve been resting my nose on. I started my week of leash loosening at Bimbo’s 365 on Wednesday night. This was my first time there and the one word I can use to describe it is “classy.”

Noise Pop Show Review: Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes at Bimbo’s 365 Club, 2/28/10
Noise Pop is over, and what better way to bring the festival to an end than Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It was a lazy Sunday here in the city, so lazy that I lazily missed the opening bands at Bimbos and spent 20 minutes looking for parking because I was too lazy to take public transportation to beautiful Bimbo’s 365 Club.
But enough about my inability to be on time, let’s talk about Mr. Sharpe (actually Alex Ebert, front man of Ima Robot), his merry band of bards, and their ability to perform. It would be an understatement to say that they put on a great show. They had the crowd at a very giggly “Hello, San Diego!” There was enough flannel in the audience to clothe Williamsburg in the winter, and by the smell of things, everyone was a jolly as the crowd at Woodstock. Show Review: The Dodos with Ruby Suns at Bimbo’s 365 Club, 10/29/09
The Dodos are a band that seem on the cusp of something big right now. Getting Phil Ek, my favorite indie rock producer of all time, on board for their newest record is a sign of big things to come. That record, Time to Die, is heavily focused on soothing vocals melodies and crazy guitar playing from Meric Long, accompanied by strong rhythms from drummer Logan Kroeber. What could this sound like in a live setting? Continue reading “Show Review: The Dodos with Ruby Suns at Bimbo’s 365 Club, 10/29/09”
