Spinning Platters Weekly Guide To Bay Area Concerts: September 15th-21st

At Bottom Of The Hill Sunday Night
At Bottom Of The Hill Sunday Night

Welcome to the next part of the saga… I will tell you what shows you will be going to this week, and then you marry my 2nd cousin, but just so you can stake claim to his portion of the hope diamond.

Tuesday, September 15th

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Fool’s Gold, Local Natives at The Independent, 8 PM

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are a large band started by a semi-popular indie rock band breaking up, and the lead singer having bigger, bolder ambitions with the music. But, this is not the Polyphonic Spree. Still a bit insane, but a little bit darker and maybe even a bit more ambitious.

Southern Culture On The Skids, Los Straightjackets at The Blank Club (San Jose), 8 PM

Wednesday, September 16th

The Arctic Monkeys, The Like at The Fox Theater (Oakland), 8 PM

The Arctic Monkeys have made it past the sophomore slump, and have produced an excellent record for junior year. The Like are still sitting on their second album, but this LA trio have spent their time out of the studio working the road hard, and each time around they grow stronger. A great double bill at a great venue.

Thursday, September 17th

The Avengers, Pansy Division, Paul Collins Beat at The Uptown Nightclub, 9 PM

The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols at Winterland in 1978. They broke up before they released their debut album. In 1999, Lookout Records released a disc of odds ‘n ends to make up for the fact that their sole album has been unavailable for years, stuck in record label limbo. Ten years later after that release, and 26 years after its original release, that album is finally back in stores! I consider it to be one of the most important records in musical history at its record re-release party. Providing support is the Bay Area’s queer punk legends, Pansy Division! (Also at Bottom Of The Hill 9/18)

Monotonix, Triclops!, Hightower at The Independent, 8 PM

Phoenix, The Soft Pack (Formerly The Muslims) at The Warfield, 8 PM (Sold Out)

Friday, September 18th

Miley Cyrus, Metro Station at Oracle Arena, 7 PM

Yes, I am suggesting that you go see Miley Cyrus. She does pure pop gold, and her voice only improves with age. Her older brother’s band Metro Station will provide support in all of their gooey new wave glory.

Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Depreciation Guild, Cymbals Eat Guitar at Great American Music Hall, 9 PM

Porcupine Tree,That 1 Guy at The Warfield, 8 PM

Saturday, September 19th

Little Boots, Music Go Music, Yes Giantess at The Independent, 9 PM

Little Boots is, much like Miley Cyrus, pure pop goodness. Only here, you get to enjoy the bubbly goodness up close and personal. And, the crowd will all be over 21.

Meat Puppets, Dead Confederate at Slim’s, 8 PM

Sunday, September 20th

Gaslight Anthem, Murder By Death, The Loved Ones, Frank Turner at The Fillmore, 8 PM

Gaslight Anthem are a pop punk band from New Jersey. Murder By Death are the best cello-emo band out there.

Tigercity, Royal Bangs, The Actors at Bottom Of The Hill, 8 PM

Monday, September 21st

Titus Andronicus, The So So Glos, The Relatives at Bottom Of The Hill, 9 PM

Glorious chaos and chant along choruses… Expect an evening of pure anarchy and glory….

Get Up Kids, Youth Group, Pretty & Nice at The Fillmore, 8 PM
