Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 11/3/11-11/9/11

Playing The Fillmore on Tuesday!

Happy November! Please go to these shows!

Thursday, November 3rd

Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, Red Fang at The Warfield

Yes, this is a metal show. But it isn’t your ordinary metal show. This epic triple bill brings you 3 of the smartest and weirdest bands that can possibly be embraced by the the mainstream listening public. This show will rock both hard and smart.

Kate Voegele, Parachute, Conor Flynn at Slim’s

Friday, November 4th & Saturday, November 5th

WILD FLAG, Drew Grow & The Pastor’s Wives at Great American Music Hall

I was a little nervous about this band for a while. Supergroups are so inconsistent, and it’s rare that they actually perform as expected. Surprisingly, all four components come together to create something that might actually be greater than the some of it’s parts. Now, the only think I’m worried about is Sleater-Kinney not actually every playing again.

Minus The Bear, The Velvet Teen (Fri), The Lonely Forest (Sat) at Slim’s

The great thing about these two shows happening on the same two nights is that you can actually do both! Double your punky, progy, experimental rock n roll pleasure!

Sunday, November 6th

Weird Al Yankovic at The Fox Theater – Oakland

When it rains, it pours… Yankovic went over a decade without playing a proper bay area show. Now we get two shows that are only about a year apart. I guess he saw what he was missing. This time he is also promoting both a new record and a new DVD, both are fabulous. Expect to see a fantastic show from one of the finest performers in history.

Mike Doughty, Moon Hooch at The Independent

Monday, November 7th

You know the deal with Mondays? The always ruin that dream about making out with Valentino… Tuesday will be much better. Why?

Tuesday, November 8th

The Bangles, A Fragile Tomorrow at The Fillmore

The Bangles!!! Do I need to say more? How about the fact that tickets are $27.50, the are guaranteed to play at least 3 songs that you know deep within your soul, and they still sound (and look) fantastic. Who in their right mind wouldn’t go? (Note: first vid is from 2010)

Wednesday, November 9th

Caitlin Gill, OJ Patterson, Amy Miller, and super secret surprise headliner at Vitus

Yes this is a comedy show. It’s a comedy show at a new venue in Oakland, and I am always down for promoting a new venue. Also, there is a super secret headliner. The person that is headlining, I can confirm, is not Susannah Hoffs. It is a very famous person that has even been on television! And not just standing on one. The reason we can’t say who it is? Well, this person is also playing a show at one of the big, fancy comedy clubs run by some big fancy company. That we don’t hate on, because, well, they are bringing the freekin’ Bangles to town. So, yeah, let’s listen to Amy Miller talk about accidental anal:

Lykke Li, First Aid at The Fox Theater – Oakland

Loney Dear, Harbours at Cafe du Nord
