Spinning Platters Guide To Bay Area Concerts: January 1st-5th

A rare screening of Penelope Spheeris' most disturbing film outside of Wayne's World

The holiday gives a short week this week. I’m sure you are eager to start the new year by seeing live music as often as you can in the coming year. Here’s a few days of good fun!

Friday, January 1st

Pine Box Boys, Los Duggans at The Elbo Room, 9:30 PM

I’m a sucker for old-timey bluegrass music made by very angry people. The Pine Box Boys are that type of band.

Saturday, January 2nd

Beats Antique, Lynx & Janover, Evan Fraser at The Independent, 9:00 PM

One part breakbeat, one part middle eastern music, one part funk band. There will be live dancers on stage, and there will be even more dancers in the crowd. Probably 100% of the crowd will be dancers. So many dancers that they had to throw in a second show on January 3rd.

Arnocorps, Poisonous Great White Lion Snake, Cycloptopus at Stork Club, 9:00 PM

Sunday, January 3rd

Hunx & His Punx, Brilliant Colors, Gun Outfit at The Hemlock Tavern, 9:00 PM

Brilliant Colors are a great local punk band with female vocals and lots of reverb. Hunx & His Punx are a side project of the amazing Gravy Train!!! They are a little bit lighter on the dirty and a little less hip hop, but still a fun dance party to be had. And, it’s only $6! How can you beat that!!

Monday, January 4th

Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble Of San Francisco at Yoshi’s — Oakland, 8 PM

Age range of this combo = 13-85. Youth is a very broad concept. And well-played latin jazz is always fun to see live.

Tuesday, January 5th

Decline Of Western Civilization, Part 2 at 924 Gilman St, 7:30 PM

The sequel to the Penelope Spheeris’ amazing film. This is a documentary about the 80’s hair metal scene in Los Angeles. It’s a deeply disturbing and honest portrayal of a mis-understood scene. It’s also a difficult film to come across, since it has never had a DVD release, and has only had limited distribution on home video. Don’t miss this rare chance to see a film of epic brilliance and importance.

The Blank Tapes, Cannons & Clouds, Mystery Lights, Worker Bee at Cafe du Nord, 8:00 PM
