Sketchfest Review: We’re No Doctors with Steve Agee and Busy Philipps, 1/17/19

For those who have been following my Sketchfest reviews for a while, every year I like to play a little “podcast roulette.” I’ll pick a podcast that I’ve never heard, nor heard of before, and go see it live. Sometimes I’ll pick them entirely at random. Other times, like tonight, I’ll base my arrival on the guests. This podcast is called “We’re No Doctors,” which I could only assume was a podcast where famous people talk about their medical history with two people obsessed with medicine but have no medical experience. And with the great Jane Wiedlin as the guest (the guitar player for The Go-Go’s, a band famous for their pharmaceutical adventures), I figured there would be some good stories.

Hosts Steve Agee (one of the stoners in The Sarah Silverman Program) and Busy Philipps (the only Dawson’s Creek cast member, besides the star James Van Der Beek,  to appear in Don’t Trust The B in Apartment 23) came out, with Phillips singing and dancing to the theme song, The two bantered for a bit, with Agee ribbing Phillips about how she’s missed like 10 episodes because she “has a talk show on E!” and Philipps, on message with the show, talking about the heinous cold she’s been battling. Their banter was solid. They were so distracted by it that Agee started to introduce their guests three times before completing the mission. Dana Gould came out first, briefly chatting with the hosts, and Weidlin came, walked right passed the hosts, went on her knees and “thanked the stage.” When she sat down, she told Philipps that Marie Kondo told her to do it.

The format for the night was pretty consistent: Gould would tell a story of something medical, then Weidlin. As expected, Weidlin has lived a way more interesting life. Gould was really funny, but Weidlin was just more shocking! She attended a Spaghetti-and-Vicodin Party where, at the end, they tried to climb to the top of Yerba Buena Park. Using lightsabers as flashlights. Leading her to fall off, with dramatic injuries causing the Go-Go’s to cancel their farewell tour. (Thus not breaking up!) This story was good. The story about shoving opium up her butt was better, but you’re gonna have to download the podcast for that.

We were treated to 90 minutes of medical stories from the host and guests. There were very few clunkers, but the other one that I really liked Agee’s… He went for a dinner party, and was hungry when he arrived. He went to the kitchen and found some cookies. So he ate a few to tide him to dinner. By a few, the answer was five. When dinner was served, the host told everyone the were having weed cookies for dessert. That’s about when the sheer amount of weed hit him. Hard. Like, can’t speak hard. And every guest made fun of him for it. I felt for the guy, as the same thing happened to me once, and I don’t even smoke weed, so it was just scary.

“We’re No Doctors” was a solidly fun night out. I’m definitely checking this podcast out again, and maybe subscribing to it! Also, I was reminded to always double check if a baked good is dosed, and to never use anything but a real flashlight for night hikes.
