Yeah, so normally I put a funny pic that makes fun of the name of some band playing this week. But, instead, we are giving away a pair of tickets to see the Metalliance Tour at Mezzanine on Sunday, April 3rd. It will be an amazing night of  non-stop metal madness, capped off by the great HELMET! Simply email promo@spinningplatters.com by Friday at 3 PM, and one lucky winner will be picked at random. Just give me your name, email, and phone number and in the subject, put METALLIANCE CONTEST. Winner will be informed by email. And if you don’t win, tickets are for sale here!

Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 3/24/11 – 3/30/11

Opening for DOM at Rickshaw Stop on Wednesday.

It feels like SXSW just ended yesterday… I still haven’t quite caught up on my sleep, and my SXSars has kicked in pretty brutally, but nonetheless, I can’t stay away from the live rock n roll for very long… Check this week out! It’s pretty amazing!

Spinning Platters Picks Six: Former Teen Idols Playing SXSW

Nope, Teen Idles aren't getting back together this year...

SXSW is a great place for a band to go to generate buzz at the beginning of their career. It’s also a great place for a band that was once on the top of the universe, but isn’t anymore, and is looking for a career resurgence. Many of these bands at one point in time were “icons,” some may have even qualified as teen idols. This is a guide to some of my favorite former rock stars gracing the SXSW stages:

Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 3/10/11 – 3/16/11

You can say Hey! to this at the Rickshaw Stop on Friday night.

So it’s the run up to our annual journey to SXSW in Austin, and frankly, I haven’t been paying too much attention to what’s playing here in the Bay Area this week. But if our SXSW previews are meaningless to you because you’re staying here (as I assume most of you are), it turns out there’s plenty of good music happening right here at home, as usual. So here’s some good spots to spend your hard earned dollar. Continue reading “Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 3/10/11 – 3/16/11”

Spinning Platters Picks Six (x2): Indie and Pop Acts to Watch at SXSW

The first new band to see on my list: Kitten.

I needed a picks six x’s 2 to settle the warring factions in my South By Southwest Brain this year, new vs old.  Who do I concentrate on?  The tried and true or the exciting and fresh?  This year, more than any other for me, is bringing out the artists that I grew up with; the ones that have helped shape my musical taste.  The fangirl in me is excited to follow these people around for five days to continue my personal worship.  The music journalist in me is excited to see some new acts that will hopefully blow my mind.  Whichever side ends up winning I am sure to have a wonderful time. Spinning Platters Guide To Noise Pop 2011

As we all know, tackling a festival like Noise Pop can be tough… There’s a lot if different things to do, and you know that they are all awesome, but how do we know which events are most awesomest of all? Well, since I am of great personal taste, you should simply obey my guidelines, and then you can do no wrong.

Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 2/17/11 – 2/23/11

A different gang of four guys is playing at The Fillmore this weekend.

Next week is Noise Pop! If you’re not excited about Noise Pop for some reason, get excited about it! Look left, right now, see the pretty advertisement for the festival, click on it, and buy some tickets to something. But if you’re some sort of meany who hates Noise Pop and everything they stand for, there’s still plenty of shows for the likes of you. We don’t support the skipping of Noise Pop, but we do appreciate the variety of shows available this coming week. You can dance, wear purple, or be a black emperor. It’s a doozy!
