Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 6/23/11-6/29/11

Seriously folks…. What’s with all of these unGoogleable band names? Do you really think that’s a good idea? Some really great bands like BOBBY, Parachute, and Comma are all playing this week… And, I’m sorry, but you really need to sell yourselves hard at these shows so people remember you, and don’t end up finding Brady Bunch clips, airplane safety gear, or a book on grammar.

Thursday, June 23rd

Thao & Mirah, BOBBY, Led To Sea at Great American Music Hall

Thao & Mirah are two of the most inventive songwriters in Indie rock, and opening the show is a little band called BOBBY. This group does an absolutely stunning version of mellow folk/shoegaze fusion.

Meklit Hadero, Jhameel at The Independent

Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs, The Ferocious Few, Tumblewood Wanderers at Bottom Of The Hill

Peter Murphy at Amoeba Music – SF (6 PM)

Friday, May 24th

Peter Murphy, Michael Shapiro at Bottom Of The Hill

What’s up with the biggest man in goth playing the tiniest places on Earth? It would be worthwhile to attend this show just to see in Murphy hits his head on the very low ceiling at Bottom of The Hill. Crazy!

The Glitch Mob, Ana Sia, Comma at The Regency Ballroom

Saturday, June 25th

Alison Krauss + Union Station, M Ward at The Greek Theater – Berkeley

M Ward has this weird way of aligning himself with the most beautiful women with the most beautiful voices. His wife most be either a.) the hottest woman alive or b.) M Ward is one of the most trustworthy men on earth. It’s probably both… But we will never know because M Ward is very private. Alison Krauss is, of course, one of my all time favorite musicians, and near the top of my rock star crush list. This double bill is the one that I’ve been waiting to see happen for many, many years…

Zeke, The Hookers, Black Wizard, Electric Sister at The Uptown Nightclub

Sunday, June 26th

Rush at Sleep Train Pavilion at Concord

To quote one of the greatest films of all time, “Geddy Lee! Best Bass Player Ever! C’mon!”

Matt Nathanson, OneRepublic, Michelle Branch, Parachute, Andrew Allen at Speedway Meadow – Golden Gate Park

Yellow Magic Orchestra, Prefuse 73 at The Warfield

I’m pretty sure that this clip says it all:

Tuesday, June 28th
