Mosswood Meltdown Line Up Announcement!

Remember late 2019 when the amazing Bikini Kill announced they were touring again, and those dates included an appearance at Burger Boogaloo in Oakland? And remember how excited we all were? And then a self-destructive GOP gambled away anything possibly enjoyable in 2020 by deciding that “COVID-19 will just go away on its own” instead of doing something bold and decisive and fast, and over a year of our lives was stolen from us?

Well, I’ve got some good news for you. Coming to Mosswood Park on July 2nd and 3rd, 2022, is a brand new festival, rising from the ashes of Burger Boogaloo. The event organizers have cut all ties with Burger Records and are bringing you two days of punk rock fun, and John Waters is still on board as the master of ceremonies! It’s called Mosswood Meltdown, and your original Burger Boogaloo tickets will still be good for it!

Who is playing? Well, the legendary Bikini Kill is making their first Bay Area appearance since the late ’90s. Belgium’s new wave pioneer Plastic Bertrand is playing their first Bay Area EVER. The Carbonas are playing their first Bay Show in over a decade, too! Rounding out the first wave of bands are my favorite modern band, BLEACHED, local icons Shannon Shaw, Pansy Division, and Rubinos, as well as The Fevers, The Younger Lovers, and Midnite Snaxxx. Plus many more to come, including what is rumored to be an absolutely amazing second headliner. 2 Day GA and VIP Passes as well as single-day tickets are ON SALE NOW!!!

Outside Lands Daily Lineups & Single Day Tickets

I’m forever grateful that the good folks of Another Planet and Superfly are working hard to make Outside Lands happen this year. And I know many of you loyal readers are sad that they missed out on buying 3-Day passes. Or didn’t buy them because they were waiting for the daily lineups to see if they can cancel their usual Halloween plans for this.

Well, cancel those Halloween plans because Outside Lands announced their single-day lineups, and, well, Tame Impala, Brittany Howard, Kehlani, and freaking Nelly are playing on Halloween! Also, whoever decided to book Neal Francis and Neil Frances for the same day deserves a prize. The rest are below the jump. Single Day Tickets are on sale Thursday, April 29th at 10 am! Soccer Mommy is dropping tour dates, too? WOAH! Could this thing actually end this year?

We all saw the sad news that My Chemical Romance and Rina Sawayama both decided to push their Fall tours to 2022. It made me feel a little nervous about the tours and festivals betting on getting out of this by Fall. And then, I opened my inbox to see that Soccer Mommy, who put out one of my favorite records of 2020, color theory, is making a go out of touring this year, and it made me feel a LOT calmer. Tickets and on sale dates can be found here! Purchase, stream, or download color theory HERE(you won’t regret it!).

WHOA! BULLY AND JULIEN BAKER HAVE NEW TOUR DATES (not together, sadly)!!!!

Sorry about all caps, but things are starting to look like this whole pandemic thing might really have an end date. For the first time since March of 2020, today saw full-fledged, all-new, legit tour dates getting released for later this year. Not “rescheduled from 2020 to keep these dates on a calendar and hope they actually can happen” tour dates. Not “virtual tour” tour dates. Not “limited capacity / social distancing in the venue” tour dates. Full cap, legit tours. From artists that seem to have been taking the pandemic seriously from the get-go! Continue reading “WHOA! Spinning Platters presents “How Did I Get Here?” Season 2, Episode 2 with Mickey Darius of Broken Clover Records

Spinning Platters presents “How Did I Get Here?” is available almost everywhere you enjoy podcasts. You can find us and subscribe here!

Mickey Darius is the owner of Broken Clover Records, a wildly eclectic record label featuring acts like June of 44, Enablers, Danielle de Picciotto, and many more. He also is the booking agent for several bands, including The Detroit Cobras, Negativland, and others. He ALSO manages The Lost Church, a 50 person performing arts space in San Francisco. And in his limited free time, he even DJ’s a bit. He has basically overtaken the role of “hardest working man in show business” from James Brown. We got to talk about his brief flirtation with the cello, coming of age during the 90’s rave scene in SF, finding work in ticketing, finding yourself, teaching a toddler to appreciate vinyl, and much much more.

Feel free to check out (and even purchase) some vinyl from Broken Clover’s Bandcamp page. (Zones by Enablers is a personal favorite) Also, if you have some extra money and want to help keep some of your favorite Bay Area venues afloat, feel free to donate a few bucks to the Independent Venue Alliance! Lastly, The Detroit Cobras are coming to Bottom Of The Hill on September 17th and the Ivy Room on September 18th and Negativland will be coming to Gray Area on September 17th, which gives us something to look forward to after this is over.

Outside Lands 2021 has been moved to Halloween!

The news that we’ve been expecting for quite some time has finally dropped… Sadly, it looks like it’s not quite feasible for Outside Lands to happen in August this year. The good news? We get to party together in Golden Gate Park for HALLOWEEN!!! Yes, Outside Lands 2021 has been moved to October 29-31. Does this mean that we may get a replay of Tame Impala’s Halloween 2013 show when they performed as The Spice Girls? Dear God, I really hope so.

More good news: in addition to the already stacked lineup with Lizzo, The Strokes, Tyler, The Creator, Hinds, Vampire Weekend, Kehlani, and more, we’ve got a bunch of new names! We have the first black performer ever to win an electronic music Grammy, Kaytranada. We also have Glass Animals, Lord Huron, Flo Milli, and 24kGoldn all coming to the park for a massive Halloween bash. And, of course, there is still more to come! We haven’t even thought about The Barbary, Heneiken Dome, or Gastromagic stages yet!

Tickets are available NOW! Including payment plans, if you can’t do it all at once. If you can’t make the new date, you can request a refund until April 17th. But, really, why would you not want to spend Halloween at Outside Lands?

SF Sketchfest Presents: FESTPOCALYPSE!!!

Normally, right about now, we’d be carefully analyzing the 300 or so events that would make up the 20th Anniversary of SF Sketchfest in preparation for putting out our annual “Nerd’s Guide to SF Sketchfest.” Sadly, due to the COVID pandemic, the 20th Sketchfest is going to be delayed a bit, at least until it’s safe for us to congregate again. However, the festival organizers haven’t been resting on their laurels. Instead, they have put together a ridiculous line-up for a variety show that will be getting beamed to your computers on Saturday, January 30th at 5pm PST / 8PM EST, and it’s called: FESTPOCALYPSE!!!!

Headlining are The Kids In The Hall, The State, and Mr. Show’s David Cross & Bob Odenkirk. You know the three most important sketch shows ever after SNL, In Living Color, and SCTV. There will be appearances by all of your SF Sketchfest favorites, and pretty much anyone that has ever made another human laugh EVER, if you look at the poster above. And everyone is doing all-new performances just for this special event.

Tickets are $20 and all of the proceeds go towards helping the good folks at SF Sketchfest keep the lights on and can afford to put on the event that you expect them to when they are ready. The regular ticket lets you watch it all weekend long! And for $50 you can enjoy a “virtual VIP after party” where you can actually walk around and mingle via avatar. I don’t know how they are going to do it, but I’m curious enough to find out. There are also a BUNCH of other packages for those who can spend a little more to help keep these folks afloat! Tickets are available here!

Inside Lands Schedule IS LIVE

The “Inside Lands” schedule is up and live!!! And, as I hoped, that legendary Gorillaz set, including one of maybe five times Damon and Del played “Clint Eastwood” together, is part of the mix for a late night Friday set! They also added some Gatromagic fun for the 10pm hour, and sets by LP and Elton John have been thrown in, too! This is starting at 4pm on Friday at twitch.tv

The full schedule can be found here.

They are even selling merch, which is kind of awesome. Especially since they are doing this for free, and are missing out on 2020.

And, don’t forget to buy tickets for 2021. I know I’m chomping at the bit to get “Outside” again, and I don’t even care how bad that pun is.

BREAKING: The Line-Up for Inside Lands 2020 Has Been Announced

We all spent that last two weeks looking at our Facebook memories of photos from 12 years of Outside Lands, noticing how perfect the weather was two weekends ago, and being sad, and then angry, and then sad again that we weren’t going to get to commune together in Golden Gate Park for music, comedy, food, and community this year. (Especially since Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is also off the table)

I know it’s not the same, but August 28th – 29th, starting at 4pm each day, twitch.tv is broadcasting a whole new special event called “Inside Lands.” We are getting archival performances, and although we don’t know exactly what we are going to see, but I hope to got we get to relive the portion of Gorillaz EPIC 2017 set with that bone chilling, inhuman scream that Maseo belted out at the beginning of “Feel Good Inc.” We will also be getting new, exclusive performances, including sets from Outside Lands 2021 acts Sharon Van Etten, Hinds, Brittany Howard, Beach House and more. It’s not the same as being in the park, but I hope this gets you close. May I recommend having some delicious take out from a local restaurant on hand, and maybe even see if your favorite local bar is doing craft cocktails to go so the experience is complete? If you want, you can even have your roommate spill beer on your blanket to make it feel right. (Kidding)

The event is hosted by Lyrics Born, and can be streamed here at twitch.tv/outsidelands. While you are there, be sure to pick up tickets for Outside Lands 2021 with Lizzo, Tame Impala, The Strokes, Tyler, The Creator, Kehlani and more! And, of course, keep practicing social distancing, wear a mask, wash your hands, and let’s crush this disease to make sure we can party next year.

To quote Lyrics Born: “Don’t worry about the president. He can’t stop the show.” Here’s the line-up: Continue reading “BREAKING: The Line-Up for Inside Lands 2020 Has Been Announced”

Announcing Inside Lands, A Virtual Festival Celebration

This morning, I woke up and started getting ready for my day, and it dawned on me: I was supposed to be gathering sunscreen, a couple of empty bottles, a few layers of clothes, a blanket, snacks, and such for my day in Golden Gate Park. Instead, I’m sitting at home, feeling about peak darkness over the state of the world, and just feeling, well, blue.

I know good news isn’t has good as it could be, but the good folks at Outside Lands did give us a lovely surprise today! They have teamed up with Twitch.tv to bring us a weekend of streamed archival performances, interviews, and fan testimonials to help us get through the lack of getting together to enjoy music outdoors this year. Go to https://www.twitch.tv/sfoutsidelands to stream this starting at 4pm August 28th & 29th. More details to come soon at https://www.sfoutsidelands.com/insidelands/!

Also, don’t forget to buy tickets to Outside Lands 2021, with the amazing lineup of Lizzo, The Strokes, Tame Impala, Tyler, The Creator, Kehlani, Hinds, and many, many more!
