OUTSIDE LANDS 2023 LINE UP ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!

Christmas came really early this year! We’ve got the full lineup for Outside Lands 2023 six whole weeks earlier than last year!!!! And they did very well, as usual. Topping the bill is Kendrick Lamar, making his first trip to the bay since the amazing Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers came out, as well as the first Foo Fighters set since the passing of Taylor Hawkins and ODESZA, making them the first electronic act to close out Lands End. Other Spinning Platters favorites include Megan Thee Stallion (Yes. This is the act I’m most excited to see), Janelle Monae, The 1975, Maggie Rogers, Lil Yachty, Interpol, Father John Misty, Orville Peck, ALVVAYS, beabadoobee, Soccer Mommy, Shaquille O’Neal (!), and my favorite current Bay Area band, Fake Fruit!

I’ve already started studying for our annual “Top 10 from the bottom half” of the poster, but don’t miss your shot to buy tickets! 3 DAY GA, GA+, VIP, and Golden Gate Club tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10am

Show Review: Soccer Mommy with alexalone at The Fillmore, 10/29/21

It’s a Fillmore show so the most important question on everyone’s mind is surely whether there would still be apples. The answer was yes but not red delicious. Some sort of fuji or gravenstein perhaps. Also new was that someone selected and handed me my apple because of COVID. I guess their job could be considered apple picker.

Only 2 names on this bill, and the first was alexalone. Continue reading “Show Review: Soccer Mommy with alexalone at The Fillmore, 10/29/21”

Soccer Mommy is dropping tour dates, too? WOAH! Could this thing actually end this year?

We all saw the sad news that My Chemical Romance and Rina Sawayama both decided to push their Fall tours to 2022. It made me feel a little nervous about the tours and festivals betting on getting out of this by Fall. And then, I opened my inbox to see that Soccer Mommy, who put out one of my favorite records of 2020, color theory, is making a go out of touring this year, and it made me feel a LOT calmer. Tickets and on sale dates can be found here! Purchase, stream, or download color theory HERE(you won’t regret it!).

Single Of The Week: crawling in my skin by Soccer Mommy

This week’s single of the week comes from Soccer Mommy! “crawling in my skin” is the most recent release from her stunning sophomore record, color theory. It’s a wonderful, mid tempo bouncer that’s a lovely antidote for our current times. As a companion video, instead of doing just one video, she’s released five videos as a “virtual tour” of five cities, featuring a performance at a landmark in each town, generated using 8-bit animation. I selected the “Austin” video for this post because I dearly miss getting to visit Austin. In the video, we see Soccer Mommy performing on the Congress Bridge, crossing the Colorado River looking onto Lady Bird Lake. The last time I crossed this bridge was leaving a Garth Brooks concert in 2017, and it always leaves me feeling warm inside. Sadly, I’ve never gotten to enjoy the bats that are featured in this clip.

color theory is available for purchase or streaming in all the usual places. Might I recommend calling your local record store to see if they have curbside pick up or local, no contact delivery? Also, once touring is safe again, please make sure Soccer Mommy (or any of your favorite bands) have a place to play by signing National Independent Venue Associations’ petition to Congress to help give financial support to help our performance spaces be able to afford to reopen.

Treasure Island Music Festival 2018 Journal

The Treasure Island Music Festival has, historically, been the last hurrah of summer. Taking place in the middle of October (or late September), it’s usually sunny and a great way to let go of the carefree warm months, before we all have to buckle to the stress of the holiday season.

Sadly, they had to take 2017 off. Even sadder was that, due to maintenance on the island, Treasure Island, for the first time, had to move from its namesake venue. We ended up drifting east a few knots to the shores of Oakland, to a beach in the middle of West Oakland’s warehouse district called Middle Harbor Park.
