Single of the Week: “Joyride” by Kesha

Kesha’s new single, “Joyride,” is a pure celebration, a dance party anthem that takes us back to the early 2010s with a little extra modern edge. With what Kesha has been through with her lawsuit against former producer Dr Luke and then his defamation countersuit, it has felt like Kesha’s music career has had to take a backseat to the drama. But if you have been paying attention, you know she has been writing songs and experimenting with her music, awaiting the day she would be free from her 6 album deal with Dr Luke’s Kemosabe Records (part of RCA), and that time is now!

Released on July 4th on her own new label, Kesha Records, this is more than a song; it is a joyful scream of independence and freedom. It is a party song for those who give no fucks. Clearly, Kesha has been honing her songwriting craft and saving the best for herself. I can’t wait to see what is coming next.

Spinning Platters’ Top 10 Albums of 2023

By The SPINNING PLATTERS STAFF

Hello! It’s your favorite procrastinating music blog here to present you with… THE LAST TOP ALBUMS OF 2023 LIST! I know everyone else is trying to be first. But the one you remember best is the last one you read, and this is probably the best list anyway. It’s also only 10 records, so you can really sink your teeth into it.

Single Of The Week: Raising Hell by Kesha featuring Big Freedia

So, Sunday is my birthday. And it seems like Kesha knew that, because she gifted the world the most amazing music video and new single for my birthday, “Raising Hell.” Structurally, we have a great 70’s country song video and lyric, all coming together with the classic, dirty and energized Kesha sound. It’s like the classic Top 40 Ke$ha melded with the more introspective and experimental Rainbow-era Kesha, and brought us a party starter that’s supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. Big Freedia’s deep and percussive voice comes through almost unexpectedly, coloring the track in a lovely way.

This track is the lead single to High Road, coming out January 10th, 2020. And, if you are still trying to decide on a Birthday present for me, you can just get me the album bundled with a bottle of Kesha’s Raising Hell Hot Sauce!  You can also preorder it in normal ways, too!

Spinning Platters Picks Six: Albums That Were Pulled Before Release

In the year 2001, I was working at a Wherehouse Music in the Financial District of San Francisco, CA. During this time period, we received regular visits from representatives from major record labels who would drop off advance CD’s of the upcoming new releases. Mid-Summer, we got a record called In Search Of… by a band called N*E*R*D. This was a side project of popular producers The Neptunes, with Neptune Pharrell Williams handling all of the lead vocals. Yes, there was a time when people didn’t know who Pharrell Willams was! Continue reading “Spinning Platters Picks Six: Albums That Were Pulled Before Release”

Festival Review: LoveLoud 2019 at USANA Amphitheatre, 6/29/19

It’s July, and another successful SF Pride Parade is in the books… or so I hear. I personally missed it, sadly, but I did so for good reason. Obviously, we live in one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world, and while it would have been fun to come out to share the celebration (not to mention the spectacle) that is Pride in the Bay Area, I chose instead to celebrate with the LGBTQ+ youth of Salt Lake City.

The only photo I took of Kesha’s LoveLoud set: her fabulous rainbow confetti all over the ground.

Utah is, of course, fairly synonymous with Mormonism. Imagine growing up LGBTQ+ and having to consider whether to stay closeted, or to come out and risk being shunned, rejected, or excommunicated not only from your entire church, but your community and likely your whole family, too. It’s not hard to see why the LGBTQ+ youth in the LDS church have an incredibly high suicide rate. Enter one of the most famous Mormons this side of Donny & Marie: Imagine Dragons’ frontman, Dan Reynolds. Reynolds founded the LoveLoud Foundation, which puts on an annual festival in the Salt Lake City area every June to allow a safe place to celebrate Pride while raising money for local and national LGBTQ+ charities.

Spinning Platters’ Top 10 Albums of 2017

A look back at the records that got us through the dumpster fire that was 2017…

By The Spinning Platters Staff

2017 may go down as one of the worst years in recorded history. In fact, I’m almost 100% certain of that. However, the best art is created out of strife, and 2017 yielded an especially passionate crop of records. So, without further adieu, here is Spinning Platters’ Top 10 records of 2017, as selected and voted on by our entire team:

Show Review: Kesha, Savoy Motel at The Masonic, 10/31/2017

Kesha, with her Mom. Photo by Dakin Hardwick.

Author’s note: We at Spinning Platters stand with survivors, and we believe women when they come forward and tell stories of having been assaulted. Due to the code of journalistic ethics, we are forced to refer to Dr Luke as an “alleged abuser” while the case is still pending in court.

Whatever you think of her music, Kesha deserves your respect. Kesha’s album Rainbow and its accompanying tour come after a long public and risky battle to take control over her career from the man who allegedly abused her. Had she lost this fight, she would have been forced to continue her close work with her alleged rapist to create new content. Had she won, but not had such strong continuing fan support on social media, she might have been able to fulfill her contract and make records, but but the label might have simply cut their losses and granted her no touring budget or promotional budget.
