Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 2022 Journal

At the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass music festival, you may arrive as an orphan, but you will leave with a close adopted family of one million.   Hosted within the iconic Golden Gate Park, an all-inclusive backyard.

Each stage appeared to have a theme of strict bluegrass, Americana, funk, rock, or soul.   It didn’t matter where you were all the stages hosted extremely talented artists with bookshelves of Grammy awards.  Even when Marcus Mumford was introducing his guests and missed one; the trust was evident.  If you were playing at Hardly Strictly, your talent is recognized, and you are welcome to collaborate.   Wondering with discovery was encouraged.  My least favorite part of the festival was making decisions, and my favorite was all decisions were good decisions. The Great Falls of the Missouri River in 1880
The Great Falls of the Missouri River, 1880.

Do you know what today is? It’s June 13, yes – and that means today is the anniversary of the day that Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition caught sight of the Great Falls of the Missouri River for the first time. Bet that made for a pretty good day.

Speaking of finding things, let’s talk about this week’s concerts. Here’s what we’ve got coming up this week in the Bay Area: low people, electric people, minimal people, and a trivia night hosted by the people in Spinning Platters. It’s looking pretty good out there!

So, let’s preview. Preview time. Preview time is go. Previews are starting now and we are going to start the previews now. Previews go!

It’s common for the fame of the song to equal the fame of the artist, and Elvis Costello came out with a handful of hits in the 80s that have made their way into the American consciousness. “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love and Understanding” is one of the great rock anthems of the early 80s: a wanting to be more caring, but feeling burned and raw from life’s disappointments, and is as least as famous as the artist himself.  He’s always been a broad reaching artist; early tracks of his like “Shipbuilding” and “Almost Blue” straddle the edge of jazz, but he’s best known for his angsty, sometimes political rock and roll from the 80s and early 90s.

He’s evolved as an artist since then, releasing jazz and country albums containing some truly excellent material, and more or less leaving his rock days behind. I imagine it must be a frustrating blessing to be so beloved as an artist for such a small subsection of a vast and eclectic catalogue; shows sell out but the audience wants the same five or six songs, when there are fifty newer songs that will never receive the same attention. It’s like the inverse to “adultolescence”, where instead of the artist’s refusal to grow, everyone else is attached to what he did at age 25. I’m guilty of this, and while I can get behind his new material, and his move towards a Merle Haggard musical style – a grandiose goal, and one he can pull off – I miss the angry rock star who I grew up listening to.

Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 9/30/2010-10/6/2010

Wolf Bands are playing again! I love wolf bands!!! When can I see a wolf band?!?!?

The month that has been declared as “Rocktober” kicks off this week, and despite the fact that many of our good friends are trapped in Vegas for a an expensive schmooze-fest with the indie rock elite, and I’m still kind of bummed that I won’t be able to escape to LA for what appears to be the greatest line up for a single show ever! But, I digress, this is still kind of a “Holy Crap!” week here in the bay area, filled with some pretty special stuff. Take a look!

I consider myself to be a music fan.  I enjoy listening to music quite a bit.  When I’m not listening to music, I am usually talking about music or reading about music.  I consider myself to be pretty good at appreciating music… but I will never be as good at it as Elvis Costello.
