This is part 10 of a continuing series… Next week, we will discuss how race relations affected the reconstruction.

Tuesday, July 28th

The Noisettes, Princeton at The Rickshaw Stop, 8 PM

The Noisettes are an aggressive soul-punk band from London. Lead vocalist Shingai Shoniwa is the kind of front woman that forces you to remain focused throughout the entire set, and if you look away, she will destroy you. Enjoy this intimate show while you can… In the UK they recently toured with Lady GaGa as their opener.

Jarvis Cocker, Wooden Shjips at The Fillmore, 9 PM

Jewel, Ashley Monroe at The Warfield, 8 PM

Wednesday, July 29th

Leo Kottke at Yoshi’s (SF), 8 PM

Leo Kottke is one of the greatest guitarists in the history of fingers. On the surface, he may come off as any other new age player, but once he gets going, his fingers do things that no human can do.

Thursday, July 30th

N*E*R*D,  The Clipse at The Warfield, 9 PM

Pharrell Williams is a musical genius. He’s written more songs in his lifetime than you’ve heard, and every single one of them is huge. The Clipse write songs about selling crack, and they’re playing on the same block as the best place in town to purchase crack. This show is great marketing.

Trashcan Sinatras, Brookville, The Music Lovers at Cafe du Nord, 8 PM

Friday, July 31st

Stan Ridgway, Donovan Quinn & The 13th Month at The Great American Music Hall, 9 PM

Wall Of Voodoo were great. Would you like to hear those songs done acoustically? Even better…

The Offspring at The Warfield, 8 PM

Saturday, August 1st

Heavenly States, French Miami, Railcars, 60 Watt Kid, Anderson Congress, Vitiligo at Cafe du Nord, 7 PM

The Heavenly States are both dreamy & aggressive. And they are very nice guys… This event is being put on by The Deli SF, which is our competition in terms of local music blogs, but we’re fine with that…

Sunday, August 2nd

Sonic Youth, Awesome Color at The Fox Theater, 8 PM

I don’t know if there is any more that can be said about Sonic Youth that hasn’t already been said, but, goddamn their good. They might be that has remained consistently active for as long as they have… (28 years for those keeping score) And yes, some of those records may not have been as good as others, but none of them have been bad.

Deerhoof, Abe Vigoda, Zach Hill, Death Sentence:Panda at The Great American Music Hall, 8 PM

Who in god’s name booked this show the same night as Sonic Youth???? Amazing bill. Purely amazing.

Monday, August 3rd

Reel Big Fish, English Beat, Supervillains at The Regency Ballroom, 8 PM

10 years ago, this would have been the biggest show of the summer. 2nd wave and 3rd wave ska together on one super bill! Alas, this show is happening now, and it will be great. No poseurs, just people ready to skank.

  1. You complain about Sonic Youth vs Deerhoof/Abe Vigoda and I whine about Noisettes vs Jarvis Cocker.
This is certainly a week of conflicts.
Though I think you chose the newer band and I chose the dinosaur…

  2. Jarvis vs Shingai is a really difficult competition, in terms of sex appeal.
