Next week brings us Sketchfest, where some pretty amazing musicians will be in town to accompany some pretty amazing comedians. Then we have the Winter Music Festival, which will be followed by Noise Pop, which will be followed by a series of bands making there way through on their way to SXSW, and then Coachella, then it’s summer. So, please enjoy your last week of regular programming before summer.
Wednesday, January 6th
Can’t Find A Villain, The Ferocious Few, Monbon, The Polymer Drone at The Elbo Room, 9 PM
The headliner is some interesting minor-key horror hip hop. The main support, though, is a rare moment in music where the band that busks on the street actually jumps in to the club world. Everyone in SF has seen the Ferocious Few, a brilliant spooky, bluesy combo that seems to enjoy the corner of Church & Market. This is a rare chance to see them someplace warm.

Thursday, January 7th
Roy Hargrove with Special Guest Pharoah Sanders at Yoshi’s–SF, 8 & 10 PM
Roy Hargrove is a name that few outside of the mainstream jazz circuit are aware of, which is kind of sad, because he has more talent in his pinky than the entire JVC Jazz Festival. The man can play anything, from hip-hop to rock to experimental music to, lord help me, mainstream jazz. Just to help give him some much needed street cred, he’s bringing along Pharoah Sanders, the main that learned from John Coltrane and was named by Sun Ra. This will be an amazing evening. (Playing two shows a night until 1/10)

Friday, January 8th
Devildriver, Suffocation, Goatwhore, Thy Will Be Done at Slim’s, 8 PM
Devildriver were formed after the end of Coal Chamber, but are a completely different breed of metal. Devildriver are just pure, brutal intensity. And, despite the aggression on stage, they are actually some of the friendliest people that I have ever met.

Saturday, January 9
Kimya Dawson, Your Heart Breaks, Angelo Spenser at Rickshaw Stop, 5 PM
Most people first became aware of Kimya Dawson via 2007’s Juno. This was a pinnacle moment for the American people’s collective musical taste. Her warm, childlike genius was finally getting some notice, and she is now actually able to make a living as a musician. She’s recording her next record in Berkeley, which means that we may get a few chances to see her over the next few months, but if she doesn’t, we at least have two shows this weekend to sate ourselves. (Also playing 1/10 at The New Parish.)

I’m a sucker for reverb drenched 50’s rock, and Shannon does it with a wicked sense of humor.
