Deerhoof at SF MoMA

So, I’m not even quite sure I understand what this is. Local art rock legends Deerhoof and visual artist Adam Pendelton reimaging Godard’s Sympathy For The Devil. The film is, of course, the bizarre fusion of a documentary on The Rolling Stones and The Black Panthers. I honestly have no idea what to expect with this, but there is some real talent involved in creating this one night only exhibit, and Deerhoof are playing live, which is always awesome.

Friday, September 16th & Saturday, September 17th

Thievery Corporation, AM and Shawn Lee (Fri Only), Frank Mitchell, Jr (Sat Only) at The Fox Theater – Oakland

I, personally, have never seen Thievery Corporation live. I have, however, heard amazing things about this group. They aren’t quite house or jazz or anything in particular, but have a seriously awesome & unique sound. Opening on Friday is the funky psychedelia of AM & Shawn Lee.

Friday, September 16th

Teddybears, K. Flay, Tigercat at Rickshaw Stop

The always amazing K. Flay is warming up the crowd for Sweden’s Teddybears. The best thing about this full band electronica band? They are actual teddybears!

Saturday, September 17th

Peter Hook & The Light, Oona at Mezzanine

We recently had the opportunity to talk to one of the greatest bass players in rock before this tour where he will be playing Joy Division’s Closer from beginning to end. In addition to the pure greatness of Hooky doing his old Joy Division stuff, we also have North Bay New Wave awesomeness from Oona warming up.

Caifanes at The Warfield

On the list of bands that I thought that I would never have opportunity to see: Caifanes were one of the first great rock en espanol bands. They eventually evolved into Jaguares, who tour pretty regularly, but this is special, and you shouldn’t miss this very special moment to see this band live.

Bush, Dead Sara at Great American Music Hall

Mr Gwen Stefani must be getting jealous of all the fun his wife had when she reunited with her amazing band from the 90’s. I may start a flame war by saying the No Doubt were infinitely better than Bush. But nonetheless, there were some excellent songs that came out of this band, and, unlike No Doubt, Bush have managed to get a new record out to us. Also, unnecessary bit of this writer’s autobiography: in high school I once missed Bush’s entire set at a music festival because I was busy chatting up a girl that I had a crush on while she waited in line to buy an egg roll. It was a fail.
