Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 8/23/12 – 8/29/12

Getting the band back together for a show at The Regency Ballroom this Wednesday Night!

It’s time for another beautiful week of rock & roll! LA’s FYF Fest is bringing a bunch of really special gigs to SF, starting this week Desaparecido’s first ever show in SF! It’s going to be a good Late Summer.

Thursday, August 23rd

Eleni Mandell, David Dondero, Shel at Cafe du Nord

Eleni Mandell is a fantastic singer songwriter from LA. Her fantastic storytelling skills call to mind early Suzanne Vega. David Dondero is a local singer songwriter, best known as being an early influence on Conor Oberst. Together, it’s one of the best double bills you will find in SF this summer.

Animal Kingdom, Atlas Genius at Rickshaw Stop

Friday, August 24th

The Protomen at 330 Ritch

The Protomen are a theatrical rock band that are heavily influenced by the classic 80’s video game Mega Man. WTF? THF:

Hank 3, Attention Deficit Domination, 3 Bar Ranch at The Regency Ballroom

Saturday, August 25th – Sunday, August 26th

Rock The Bells at Shoreline Amphitheater

For the first time ever, this fantastic traveling hip hop festival has expanded to two days. It also marks the first time it’s organizers have booked any mainstream artists, creating an interesting bill that shows that the underground, the mainstream, and the classic can all coexist in one happy place. So you get the joy of spending two days with 2 Chainz, Ice Cube, Deltron 3030, Salt n Pepa, Kid Cudi, DJ Lance Rock (of Yo Gabba Gabba), and many, many more!

Saturday, August 25h

Fred Frith plays GRAVITY, Dominique Leone Band at Slim’s

One of the greatest avant garde guitar players of our time has assembled a amazing group of musicians to perform his most loved, most accessible, and, oddly, strangest work: the album Gravity. This ecstatic piece of work dissects the notion of “dance” music throughout the centuries. This is a very special, one time only event, and if you care about music at all, you will go to this show.

Sunday, August 26th

Theophilus London, Iamsu, Antwon at Mezzanine

Monday, August 27th

Clip’d Beaks, Creepers, Feral Kizzy, Disappearing People at Elbo Room

A member of Clip’d Beaks once told me that the only people that talk to him after shows are old guys that want to talk about Brian Eno. Do me a favor, and go to this show and try to have a conversation with a member of the band about Caroliner instead. Either way, this is going to be an awesome groovy art rock show, and rumor has it there are $2 drink specials to go along with that experimentation.

Tuesday, August 28th

Under The Paris Skies w/ The Baguette Quartette and George Cole & Eurocana at Yoshi’s – Oakland

Looking for a little culture in Oakland? Look no further: Yoshi’s Oakland has a spectacular double bill running this Tuesday Night! Two amazing bands paying tribute to the French Gypsy street music of the 20’s. I highly suggest anybody looking for a good date show to buy tickets to this posthaste.

Wednesday, August 29th

Desaparecidos, The Velvet Teen at The Regency Ballroom

Years ago, Desaparacidos were booked to play Bottom Of The Hill. On the way to the show, the band broke up. So, instead, their singer, a guy by the name of Conor Oberst, ended up performing a solo acoustic set instead. So, the folks of the Bay Area never got to see this noisy punk rock side project of Bright Eyes. At least, never until now! Happily, we will finally see this band play at long last.

Thee Oh Sees, Enorchestra, Dirty Power at Bottom Of The Hill
