Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 7/8/10-7/14/10

This is what my street looks like today. Waiting on the results of the Mehserle trial. A little scared.

Well, I’m sitting in my apartment in downtown Oakland, looking outside, waiting for all hell to break loose. And, if the entire city doesn’t burn to a crisp tonight, I’m going to check out some of these shows!

Thursday, July 8th

Marina & The Diamonds at 330 Ritch St (Popscene)

As sad as we are by the fact that she was dropped off the Shoreline Lilith show at the last minute, (without any announcement!) we still love Marina… This is now her Bay Area debut, and we are excited to catch her Kate Bush-inspired pop music in such an intimate setting.

Deerhoof, The Donkeys, Southeast Engine at Bottom Of The Hill

Sold out, but that’s never stopped you before, has it?

Friday, July 9th

The Dwarves, Tater Famine, Thee Merry Widows at Thee Parkside

This is an acoustic show. And this is a Dwarves show. You put it together…. Should be pretty crazy!

El Guincho, Still Flyin’, Ghosts On Tape at Rickshaw Stop

Saturday, July 10th

Paul McCartney at AT+T Park

Paul McCartney plays bass. He plays it quite well. I’d like to see him play bass in public, and I hear it could be a pleasant thing. He also writes some good tunes, and I think a few of them that he’s going to play will be familiar to a few folks in the audience. I kind of think that he might end up becoming as popular as The Zombies.

Au Revoir Simone, Social Studies, Alexa Wilding at Great American Music Hall

If I don’t find a ticket at a reasonable price to Macca, I’m going to this instead. I think you should listen to the best band ever named after a Pee Wee Herman reference.

Sunday, July 11th

Birds & Batteries, Grand Hallway, The Mornin’ Dove at Cafe du Nord

These guys are great. The are one part pure pop, one part prog, one part indie, and all sorts of a good time live. If you missed them last month at Rickshaw, be sure to check them out tonight!

Yes, Peter Frampton at Mountain Winery

Monday, July 12th

Neil Young & Burt Jansch at Fox Theater – Oakland

Neil Young is cool & all, but the real excitement is that he’s bringing along legendary folk musician Burt Jansch, a peer of the late, great Nick Drake, and one of the greatest songwriters in history.

Farmer Dave Scher, Seventeen Evergreen, Tim Cohen at Rickshaw Stop

Tuesday, July 13th

The Hot Toddies at Amoeba – Berkeley

It’s the middle of summer, and The Hot Toddies are the perfect summer band. It’s also a free show at a record store by this wonderfully summery band, so you don’t have any excuses!!

Wednesday, July 14th

Betty LaVette, Milton at Great American Music Hall

She is one of the greatest living singers, and a natural treasure. Consider it an honor to see such an icon in such an intimate venue for such a low price. This show will be one that you tell your grandchildren about.

Sean Bonnett, Kepi Ghoulie, Gnarboots at Bottom Of The Hill
