Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 6/14/12-6/20/12

Thursday Night At The Fillmore

There is absolutely no reason for you to ever stay in on any night of the week. Well, except for the night that Nickelback are playing. You can stay in that night.

Thursday, June 14th

Japandroids, Cadence Weapon at The Independent

This Vancouver, BC duo has been bubbling under the mainstream consciousness for a numb of years, putting out great, noisy rock records and playing every divvy hole in the wall in America. Well, all that hard work has certainly paid off, because with their latest release, Celebration Rock, they have proven that they have the chops to make a move out of the punk clubs and are selling out 500 seaters all across the country. See them now before you are stuck seeing them from the nosebleeds.

The Jesus & Mary Chain, Magic Wands at The Fillmore

Friday, June 15th

Soko, Rob Sokolinski, Vandella, Slow Moving Lions Of The Vegetable World at Bottom Of The Hill

Stunning French folk vocalist Soko hasn’t visited the US in three years. Which is very sad for us… Her eccentric, yet stunning music is perfect for fans of Joanna Newsom and Bjork, yet accessible enough for any fan of popular song.

How To Dress Well, Babe Rainbow, Finally Boys at Rickshaw Stop

Saturday, June 16th

Jenny Lewis, Nik Freitas at Swedish American Hall

This show was originally booked for October of last year. Nik Freitas had just put out a great record of summery pop music, and he was going out to support Elvis Costello’s favorite songwriter, Jenny Lewis. Well, in the meantime, a certain lead guitar player for Jenny Lewis’ band Rilo Kiley decided to break the band up in a magazine. Could make this for a much more interesting set than if it happened in October, or at least we could end up with some Rilo Kiley songs, which would be great to hear solo acoustic.

Battalion Of The Saints, D.I., Social Unrest, Fang, Sad Boy Sinister, Highway Murderers, Dirty Filthy Mugs, Guantanamo Dogpile, Crooked As Fuck at Oakland Metro Operahouse

Pharaoh Sanders at Yoshi’s – SF

Sunday, June 17th

Scissor Sisters, Rye Rye at The Fox Theater – Oakland

Simply one of the best live bands around- Scissor Sisters take the entire history of rock & roll and spit it back out into one epic party, full of theatrics, energy, and simply great songs.

Kate Miller-Heidke, Sylvie Lewis at Cafe du Nord

Monday, June 18th

Natalie Merchant w/ San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall

The former frontwoman for early 90’s alternative folk poppers 10,000 Maniacs has one of the most stunning and chilling voices around. At this show, she will be performing songs from her vast catalog with the help of the San Francisco Symphony. This will be one of the most unique musical experiences this year.

Nickelback, Bush, Seether, My Darkest Days at HP Pavilion

Bush & Nickelback, together on one stage! All we need is Creed, and we’d be all set!

Tuesday, June 19th

Rhett Miller & The Serial Ladykillers, The Wallflowers, The Spring Standards at The Independent

Rhett Miller is the lead vocalist of popular Texas alt.country hitmakers The Old 97’s. He always puts on one of the best live shows in the world, but this set is special. It also marks the first bay area performance of The Wallflowers, Jakob Dylan’s 90’s band. I don’t think they’ve ever played a place this small before, and especially in a support slot! This is unique and historical folks…

Wedensday, June 20th

Jonathan Coulton, John Roderick at Great American Music Hall

Jonathan Coulton is a cult hero. He’s managed to be the most famous and best songwriter of the current nerd renaissance. He shouldn’t be selling out venues across the country, but he is. This will be a fine evening to go out and enjoy the witticisms and hooks of John Hodgman’s former roomate.

Indigo Girls, The Shadowboxers at Slim’s
