Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 5/31/12-6/6/12

This Tuesday at The Fox!

The Bay Area is a great place to live because, well, we are never without amazing live music.

Thursday, May 31st

Xiu Xiu, Yamantanka // Sonic Titan, Father Murphy at Bottom Of The Hill

Xiu Xiu has one of the most stunning voices in modern pop music. Only he doesn’t play pop music. He plays a delicious fusion of chamber pop and experimental rock, and he’s pretty amazing.

The Revelations featuring Tre Williams, Lord Loves A Working Man at The New Parish

Friday, June 1st

The Beach Boys at The Greek Theater – UC Berkeley

Do you really need to be persuaded to go see the band that changed the face of modern pop music? This band, along side The Beatles, helped rock & roll move from music for teenagers to a respected artform. Consider this your only chance to see Brian Wilson back in the band, because this may never happen again.

Reggie Watts, Chris Garcia at The Independent

Hunx & His Punx, Shannon & The Clams, King Tuff, The Bobbyteens, King Lollipop at The New Parish

Saturday, June 2nd

Suicidal Tendencies, Strife, Stop Breathing, Civil War Rust at Oakland Metro Operahouse

Have you ever seen this video before? It’s pretty amazing…

Paul Simon w/ San Francisco Symphony, Cyndi Lauper, Janelle Monae at Davies Symphony Hall

Sunday, June 3rd

Van Halen, Kool & The Gang at Oracle Arena

When I was 4 years old, I thought that David Lee Roth was the coolest guy on Earth. I think that it may have had a negative effect on all of my future relationships, but that’s OK. I still think that he’s the coolest. Plus: Kool & The Gang!!

GBH, Far From Finished, Attitude Adjustment at The Independent

Monday, June 4th

Theresa Andersson, Lucia Comness at Swedish American Hall

No words. Just watch this video. You’ll buy a ticket before the song is over.

Tuesday, June 5th

Tim Cohen (The Fresh & Only’s), Survival Guide, 8th Grader at Brick & Mortal Music Hall

Wood Shoppe is a free monthly event a Brick & Mortar Music Hall. Each month it’s been getting a little bigger and better, and this month gives us a truly special treat. Tim Cohen is the lead singer of The Fresh & Only’s, one of my favorite local bands. Shows by his main band can be sweaty, dancey affairs. Tonight, however, we are being treated to a rare solo set. You have never heard these songs this way before, and you get it at a price you can’t beat!

Sleep, Oxbow, Kowloon Walled City at The Fox Theater – Oakland

Destroyer, Sandro Perri at The Fillmore

Wednesday, June 6th

Sean Patton, David Gborie, Clare O’Kane, Amy Miller, Collisionville at The New Parish

At one point in time, it wasn’t uncommon to get a wide variety of different forms of entertainment when you went out. At The New Parish this night, we have four great comedians and one killer rock band, making for an all around night of pure joy.

Cocorosie, Sister Nobby at The Regency Ballroom
