Metric, Mona at The Fox Theater – Oakland
Recently the public radio program “Sound Opinions” had a special on bands that released four or more records in a row that were truly excellent. Metric were sadly overlooked in this special, but, unarguably one of those bands. From the New Wave glory of 2003’s Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? to last year’s claustrophobic masterpiece Synthetica, Ms Emily Haines & crew keep putting out great record after great record. On top of that, they are a fantastic live band. There are a ton of options tonight, but this is definitely the best show.

Tinariwen are a dark rock band from Algeria. They piece together traditional African rhythms with beautiful melancholia in a way that sounds nothing like anything you’ve heard before. Lee Fields has been performing live for 43 years. And it wasn’t until 2011 when he really broke through. His sound is simple, classic R&B. The man has charisma in spades, and might be the closest you will get to seeing James Brown in person.

Aesop Rock is one of the finest MC’s in the bay area. He’s always been just a tad under the radar, but he is one of the finest live performers in the business. Opener Busdriver put out one of the finest pieces of psychedelic soul-hop you will ever hear last year. In whole, you’ve got the best double bills you will ever imagine on a Monday night.

Alex Clare is modern electronic dance music’s bluesman. His voice has an obscene amount of soul and heart, and manages to make such a robotic genre of music sound almost human!

An Evening With The Little Willies at Great American Music Hall
The Little Willies were initially conceived of as a Willie Nelson tribute band co-fronted by Norah Jones and Richard Julian, and featuring guitar god Jim Campilongo. The band eventually evolved into a country western supergroup that does a delightful combination on standards and originals. Plus, when are you going to see Norah Jones at such a small place!
