Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 3/3/10-3/9/10

Appearing at Bottom Of The Hill this weekend. Also opening for Vampire Weekend next month. This dude is pretty hip.

Kind of exciting… SXSW Music starts in only two weeks, which means that a whole lot of great bands are starting to tour. Expected hippest of the uber-hyped to be coming around these parts. Here’s the very beginning of it:

Wednesday, March 3rd

Deer Tick at The Independent, 8 PM

Deer Tick is one of the most versatile and interesting groups in alt.country. Tonight, they are playing for free at the Independent, all you need to do is let them know that you are coming. E-Mail mogshows.deertick@gmail.com and try to get there pretty early, and you can brag about the awesome show you paid for today when everyone else is paying $30 to see them later this year.

Allen Toussaint, Mark Hummel, Rusty Zinn at Great American Music Hall, 8 PM

Marianne Faithfull at Yoshis, 8 PM (Also 3/4)

Thursday, March 4th

Rocky Votolato, Adam Stephens, Tin Can Notes at Bottom Of The Hill, 9 PM

Midlake, Matthew & The Arrogant Sea at Great American Music Hall, 9 PM

Midlake started out very boring. As time went on, they started to learn more about their craft have grown to be a great band that does awesome melodic folk music with layers upon layers of beautiful sounds.

Friday, March 5th

Tegan & Sara, Holly Miranda, Steel Train at The Fox Theater — Oakland, 8 PM

Neil Young’s favorite twin sisters from the great white north have returned to the bay. Despite an inconsistent reputation as a live act, they’re most recent material has been strong enough to make any live show great. And opening act Holly Miranda is a genius. But you knew that, as a consistent reader.

Little Teeth, The Splinters, The Myonics at Uptown Nightclub, 9 PM

Free show at The Uptown. Great local experimental music. Come by after Tegan & Sara. You won’t regret it. (Also appearing at Hemlock Tavern 5/6)

Saturday, March 6th

Mike Doughty, Christina Courtin at Slim’s, 9 PM

This guy is a genius. Pure & simple. Brilliant poet, amazing voice.

Sunday, March 7th

Leslie & The Lys, Christopher The Conquered, Planet Booty at Rickshaw Stop, 9 PM

An evening of pure, unadulterated sexy weirdness. And weird sexiness. And good clean perverted fun with technology.

Abe Vigoda, Lovvers, High Castle at Bottom Of The Hill, 9 PM

Monday, March 8th

Delta Spirit, We Barbarians, Elephant Micah at Bottom Of The Hill, 9 PM

Tuesday, March 9th

Little Boots, Class Actress, Dragonette at The Fillmore, 8 PM

Who loves disco? We all love disco! Who loves the best thing to happen to disco since the mirrored ball? We do, of course! Oh, yeah, her record Boots was the #8 record of 2009 at Spinning Platters, and it doesn’t even get released until today! You can’t get cooler than that!

Mike Watt + The Secondman, Lite, Low Red Land at Bottom Of The Hill, 9 PM

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Whigs at Slim’s, 8 PM
