Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 3/24/10-3/30/10

Kid Koala is coming back to town!

After all the chaos that was Spinning Platters’ visit to Austin, TX for a bit of SXSW action, it’s time to come home and do what we did while we were in Texas, see a bunch of great live bands. Many of them we will be seeing again.  So, fire up those ear plugs and get ready to dance:Wednesday, March 24th

Metric, Codeine Velvet Club, Nico Vega at The Fox Theater – Oakland, 8 PM

Metric are one the most consistent bands on record out there, but they give very little live love to the Bay Area. This is the 3rd leg of their tour for last year’s brilliant Fantasies, yet the first time they are bringing us a full length live show. Strap on your dancing shoes and come join us for the best rock band on earth!

High Places, Mi Ami, Protect Me at Rickshaw Stop, 8 PM

Thursday, April 25th

AFI, Said Radio, Scarlet Grey at Slim’s, 8 PM

Before last December, I would have never told anyone to see AFI. I thought that they had become a bloated shell of their former selves. Then, I saw them at an over-blown radio festival and they kept it surprisingly real. The new tracks have the classic punk rock thunder going of their early days, but with a bit of grown up musical proficiency and none of that wretched emo/metal nonsense of their recent out put. You will need to put in some fancy footwork to get in to this show at this point, but if you do, it will be well worth it!

Cymbals Eat Guitars, Bear In Heaven, Freelance Whales at Bottom Of The Hill, 9 PM

Friday, March 26th

Air, AM at The Fox Theater – Oakland, 8 PM

Two amazing acts doing beautiful electronic music. This show will send your head swimming, and before you know it, your body will be grooving as well. Five letters of genius music in Oakland.

Chatmonchy, Red Bacteria Vacuum, Omodaka, OKAMOTO’s, JinnyOops! (Japan Nite) at The Independent, 8 PM

If everyone is big in Japan, will this show be super small? Find out! (Probably not, but it will be rawk.)

Saturday, March 27th

Dan The Automator Presents: Audio Alchemy w/ Kid Koala and The Jazz Mafia All Stars at Yoshi’s – SF, 10:30 PM

What happens when you take a legendary producer, a turntable genius, and a slew of some of the bay’s top jazz musicians? Whatever they can imagine…

Fleshies, Classics Of Love (Featuring Jesse Michaels of Operation Ivy), Tubers at El Rio, 9 PM

Sunday, March 28th

Titus Andronicus, Let’s Wrestle at Slims, 8 PM

Ever wanted to leave a show jubilantly chanting the phrase “Your Life Is Over! Your Live Is Over!”? Go to this show. If you don’t like that idea, don’t go to this show.

Hank III & AssJack at VooDoo Lounge, 9 PM (Also at Regency Ballroom 3/30)

Monday, March 29th

Nellie McKay, Howard Fishman at Great American Music Hall, 8 PM

I <3 this woman. I will go to this show, and hit #squee on twitter every few moments. Giddiness will ensue. She’s beautiful, funny, smart, and just insane enough to be the perfect performer.

GREG GINN & THE TAYLOR TEXAS CORRUGATORS, Guella, Barney Cauldron at Red Devil Lounge, 9 PM

Tuesday, March 30th

The Morning Benders, Miniature Tigers, Mumlers at The Independent, 8 PM

Support local music. ‘Nuff Said!
