Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts: 2017-06-28 – 2017-07-02

It’s the week between Pride Weekend and the Fourth of July Weekend. A chance to catch your breath.

Speaking of catching things, let’s talk about what you can catch in this week’s shows. What we’ve got coming up this week in the Bay Area includes: ogres, lifers, (sc)avengers, The Dude and The Iguana.

So, we’re going to do the preview now. Doing the preview now. Preview is go and now we go do the preview now. Previewwww.

The Ogres, Pynnacies (Portland) at Hemlock, S.F.

Hailing from a 2-D Hanna-Barbera cartoon’s montage sequence, The Ogres generate broad-stroke big fun garage rock here to do nothin’ less than make the whole room move its hips like it’s 1962. Someone somewhere said “Don’t read too much into this,” just dance.

• Thursday, June 29, 2017

Zander Schloss (Circle Jerks), Penelope Houston (The Avengers), San Geronimo at Thee Parkside, S.F.

Zander Schloss lived that hard, lonesome punk-rock life. Now he plays songs telling the story of his path through that life.

The Big Lebowski, The Paramount Theatre, Oakland

Witness, once more, the testimony of His Dudeness. Did you see that The Dude showed up recently to help celebrate John Goodman‘s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?

• Saturday, July 1, 2017

Iggy Pop, Guitar Wolf, Redd Kross, Nobunny, Personal and The Pizzas, Baby Shakes, Bloodshot Bill, Losin’ Streaks, Wounded Lion, Vertigo, Car Crash, host John Waters at Burger Boogaloo, Mosswood Park, Oakland (fundraiser to help rebuild Mosswood Parks Rec Center)

The Iguana himself anchors this wild collection of sounds and bands, hosted by American treasure John Waters.

Kehoe International at the Ivy Room, Albany

Ol’ Kehoe is all set to play his garage twang – as he goes so far as to call it – over in Albany on Saturday night. If you’re the sort to enjoy M.I.R.V. or the Reverend Horton Heat, it’s likely you’ll dig this. It’s music for hot Central California parking lots filled with hot rods, leather belts, and cursing.

• Sunday, July 2, 2017

Buzzcocks, X (L.A.), N.R.B.Q., F.M. Knives, Roy Loney, Shannon and The Clams, Quintron and Ms. Pussycat, Glitter Wizard, Patsy’s Rats, Jacuzzi Boys, La Luz, host John Waters at Burger Boogaloo, Mosswood Park, Oakland (fundraiser to help rebuild Mosswood Parks Rec Center)

Sunday of the fundraiser sees X, the perennial sound of a particular lost history of Southern California. The band celebrated 40 years together last year.
