Spinning Platters Weekly Guide to Bay Area Concerts, 11/15/12-11/21/12

Yes, my daughters are playing Davies Symphony Hall on Saturday.

Need to work up a good appetite for Thanksgiving? Here’s your guide:

Thursday, November 15th

Susanna Hoffs, Evolution Eden at Red Devil Lounge

Susanna Hoffs was, and still is, one of the primary members of the popular 80’s girl group The Bangles. She still sounds and looks amazing, and is currently touring a brand new record filled with 60’s inspired jangle pop that is strong enough to stand up to her classic material. You may never see her play a spot this intimate again, so don’t sleep on this show.

Rush at HP Pavilion

Tame Impala, The Amazing at The Fillmore

Friday, November 16th

The Misfits, The Attack at Oakland Metro Operahouse

Earlier this year, Glenn Danzig played The Warfield with Doyle von Frankenstein in tow. It was terrible- Doyle’s guitar wasn’t even turned on. They were sloppy, and the whole show was a mess. Instead, I highly recommend seeing Jerry Only’s version of the band, which is a fun set of Misfits and Black Flag (Dez Cadena of Black Flag is on guitar) songs done right.

Talkdemonic, Extra Classic, Jel, Midnite Snazz at Bottom Of The Hill

Saturday, November 17th

Wilson Phillips at Davies Symphony Hall

Yes, you read it here. Wilson Phillips are playing in San Francisco. Their sugary harmonies and truckload of hits are waiting for you. They also rarely tour, so this is a really special event. And, with tickets starting at $15, you really have no excuse. Trust me- you want to go to this.

The Faint plays Danse Macabre, Trust, Casket Girls at The Regency Ballroom

Sunday, November 18th

Ms Lauryn Hill at The Independent

She put out one of the best records of the 90’s. Then she spent the better part of the last 15 years in obscurity, playing erratic gigs where she shows up late and oft times incoherent. Well, last year she burst back onto the scene with a new lease on life. She sounds great, as spectacular energy, and has really brought back her live performance game. We also have the thrill of seeing her in such an intimate space. Highly recommended.

Monday, November 19th

Patrick Watson, Half Moon Run at Great American Music Hall

Rachel Yamagata, Ed Romanoff, Adrien Reju at The Independent

Tuesday, November 20th

The Joy Formidable, J. Thoven at The Chapel

This Welsh rock trio play a glorious dance rock hybrid that is always fun to experience live. The Chapel is a brand new venue in the Mission, which means you get delicious cheap burritos and a great show all on the same block. This one is a no brainer.

Counting Crows, Tender Mercies, Mean Creek at Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium

Wednesdsay, November 21st

Ana Tijoux at La Pena Cultural Center

This Chilean MC is one of the most inventive rappers in the business. Her ferocity and social consciousness is hard to ignore in any language, and this show promises to be an epic one. Her record, 1977, is going to grace everybody’s year end list, too… So be sure to see her now so you can say that you saw her “back then.”

Gold Fields, Electric Youth at Rickshaw Stop
