This is strictly blue grass.
This is strictly blue grass.

Yes, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is this week. It’s an amazing line up as usual. It’s free, so everyone is there. However, there is more than enough great music happening this week. Enjoy the shows!

Thursday, October 3rd

Thievery Corporation, BoomBox at The Fox Theater – Oakland

There is literally nothing like a Thievery Corporation show. It’s an amazing site to behold- a high energy event, with music from every genre known to man. However, it’s also something gloriously unpretentious at the same time. Everyone needs to see this band live.

The Telescopes, LSD & The Search For God, Cariton Melton, Magic Castles at Brick & Mortar Music Hall

Friday, October 3rd

Papercuts, Foxtails Brigade, Big Tits, Saucy Jacks at Uptown Nightclub – Oakland

Papercuts are a glorious band that play warm and hooky indie rock. Foxtails Brigade blend classical and folk music together in a glorious and wonderful way. Together, we’ve got a wonderful night of free music in downtown Oakland.

Explosions In The Sky, The New Year at The Masonic

Saturday, October 4th

Jimmy Eat World at Oakland Metro Operahouse

Jimmy Eat World are amazing. They are one of the tightest live bands around, and it’s very rare for them to play clubs these days. Which means it’s kind of a tough ticket to get into this show. It will be worth it, as they are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their criminally underrated 4th record Futures. They will be performing this classic record beginning to end, and will close out the set with an encore of hits. And if you can’t find yourself with a ticket to this show, you can pick up the beautifully remastered version of this record that was released this week. (Their first two record, Clarity. and Static Prevails have also been re-issued on vinyl for the first time in ages. If you don’t own these, you are only hurting yourself.)

Cibo Matto, Talk In Tongues at The Chapel

Sunday, October 6th

The War On Drugs, Cass McCombs at The Fillmore

A lot of people want to compare The War On Drugs to Don Henley. There’s nothing wrong with that. Don Henley is a great songwriter. You know who is a better songwriter? Adam Granduciel. And he’s going to kill it tonight at The Fillmore.

Bombay Bicycle Club, Milo Greene at The Warfield

Monday, October 6th

Kasabian, Bo Ningen at The Fox Theater – Oakland

You know who plays in front of 60,000 people on a regular basis throughout Europe but plays mid-size theaters throughout the US? Kasabian does. So if you’d like to see a stadium size show shoved into a beautiful art deco theater, this is your shot. Your face might melt off…

Paloma Faith, Liam Bailey at Slim’s

Tuesday, October 7th

Sebadoh, Thurston Moore at Great American Music Hall

Sebadoh is one of the greatest bands of the indie rock era. Thurston Moore was lead guitarist for Sonic Youth. If you don’t know what Sonic Youth is, I may have to send you some records. Moore is touring with an amazing band that consists of other members of My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. Anyways, this is going to be an amazing and loud evening. Bring earplugs.

Blitzen Trapper, Cassorla at The Independent

Wednesday, October 8th

Lily Allen, Lolawolf at The Fox Theater – Oakland

It’s been a weird ride for Lily Allen. She’s retired twice. She had the strangest talk show in television history. She turned her brother’s put habit into the best ska song in years. She managed to take the first rap song to win the Best Original Song Oscar and turn it into a wake up call about the way women are portrayed in the media. She’s an icon. She’s unique. And she’s playing Oakland.
