BREAKING: The Line-Up for Inside Lands 2020 Has Been Announced

We all spent that last two weeks looking at our Facebook memories of photos from 12 years of Outside Lands, noticing how perfect the weather was two weekends ago, and being sad, and then angry, and then sad again that we weren’t going to get to commune together in Golden Gate Park for music, comedy, food, and community this year. (Especially since Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is also off the table) 

I know it’s not the same, but August 28th – 29th, starting at 4pm each day, twitch.tv is broadcasting a whole new special event called “Inside Lands.” We are getting archival performances, and although we don’t know exactly what we are going to see, but I hope to got we get to relive the portion of Gorillaz EPIC 2017 set with that bone chilling, inhuman scream that Maseo belted out at the beginning of “Feel Good Inc.” We will also be getting new, exclusive performances, including sets from Outside Lands 2021 acts Sharon Van Etten, Hinds, Brittany Howard, Beach House and more. It’s not the same as being in the park, but I hope this gets you close. May I recommend having some delicious take out from a local restaurant on hand, and maybe even see if your favorite local bar is doing craft cocktails to go so the experience is complete? If you want, you can even have your roommate spill beer on your blanket to make it feel right. (Kidding)

He spoke to us about his humble beginnings as a concert promoter, how, 15 years ago, he learned how to leverage MySpace to help promote your shows and bands, and how he got to where he is today- a social media expert, concert promoter, band manager, record label owner, and owner of a recording studio.

Single Of The Week: SULA (Paperback) by Jamila Woods

In 2019, Jamila Woods gave us LEGACY! LEGACY!, a profound piece of work about reflecting on how your heroes connect to your own life. At least, that’s what I got out of it. As we know, art is subjective and you get out of it what makes sense to you. Woods could have continued spent 2020 completely quiet, but that doesn’t seem to be her way. Instead, she dropped this beauty of a ballad, “SULA (Paperback),” a reflection on the Toni Morrison novel, Sula. The song is pure Woods, drawing on elements of the piece of literature that inspired her, and making it something deeply personal. The arrangement is refreshing and tender, combining jazz ballad guitar with pedal steal and layered harmonies that just hit that part of your gut that makes you feel all warm and alive inside. 

“SULA (Paperback)” can be streamed in all the usual places, or you can purchase it off Bandcamp. While you are there, if you don’t already own LEGACY! LEGACY!, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It may never leave your turntable. 

Announcing Inside Lands, A Virtual Festival Celebration

This morning, I woke up and started getting ready for my day, and it dawned on me: I was supposed to be gathering sunscreen, a couple of empty bottles, a few layers of clothes, a blanket, snacks, and such for my day in Golden Gate Park. Instead, I’m sitting at home, feeling about peak darkness over the state of the world, and just feeling, well, blue. 

I know good news isn’t has good as it could be, but the good folks at Outside Lands did give us a lovely surprise today! Single Of The Week: Lights Out by Deep Sea Diver

It’s been far too long since Seattle’s Deep Sea Diver have graced our presence with new music. Today they graced our presence with a driving little number called “Lights Out,” complete with a new take on the “Lyric Video,” which I’m calling a “Lyrics and Guitar Tab” video. For those of you learning guitar this pandemic, this one’s for you! 

“Lights Out” is the first single off their upcoming record, Impossible Weight. You can pre-order/pre-save in all the usual places, but there are some extra special packages available from their Bandcamp page. They are even offering a “Pay It Forward” plan where you can purchase an extra copy of the record and the band will send it to someone struggling financially right now. And, since today is Bandcamp Day, if you preorder it today, the band gets EVERYTHING! Bandcamp waives their fees on the first Friday of each month. I will also recommend that you follow the band on Instagram, because they are very, very active while in quarantine, and they’ve got some good stuff pouring out of them.  

Spinning Platters Presents: How Did I Get Here? Episode 1 with Clara Bodacious

 
The beauty of the pandemic is that it’s giving many of us the opportunity, between intense bouts of despair and anxiety, the space to get some projects off the ground that have been looming for a while. That brings us to How Did I Get Here?, a podcast where I talk with people that have achieved some success in some facet of entertainment, either as a performer or someone who works behind the scenes, about their path to get to where they are today. It’s still new, but I aim to get you a new one of these every two weeks!
 
In our first episode, I ask burlesque dancer and mastermind behind the “Kind Of Blue Revue” about her path, taking us from her beginnings in burlesque, and through her development of the “Kind Of Blue Revue.”  You can find Clara at her website, ClaraBodacious.com, and you can follow her on Instagram @clarabodacious. If you want to learn burlesque, Red Hots Burlesque’s School Of Shimmy is currently on hiatus, but keep an eye out here for classes resuming. Single Of The Week: Club Zero by The Go-Go’s

Not a lot of good is happening in 2020. And, most specifically, not a lot of musicians can say that 2020 has been one of the biggest, most productive years in decades. Yet, somehow, LA punk groundbreakers, 42 years into their career, have been firing on all cylinders this year. Not only did bassist Kathy Valentine release a magnificent book chronicling her career, we also finally have a comprehension documentary from the band, detailing the long, sordid history of the band. Then, out of nowhere, we got their first new music in since 2001’s criminally underrated God Bless The Go-Go’s. The song, “Club Zero,” is the spiritual sequel to their 1997 hit “The Whole World Lost It’s Head.” Where TWWLIH was a jittery, anxious number about seemingly the entire world falling to pieces, “Club Zero” is a bold, confident injection of assurance. It’s the song we need right now- not another somber number about the fall of civilization, but a song to fire us up! A song that, in not so many words, reminds us that nobody else is going to take down fascism. Nobody else is going to stop police brutality. Nobody else is going to save our music venues. I’ve been feeling pretty dark lately, thinking that we aren’t going to survive this. We aren’t going to recover. That the combination of Trump and COVID-19 means the end of humanity. “Club Zero” tells you that’s only true if you let it be true. 

“Club Zero” can be found in all the usual places. The Go-Go’s premiers on Showtime tonight at 9/8c. The Go-Go’s, sadly, had to move their first full tour with the classic line-up since 2011 to 2021, and those tour dates are slowly trickling in and can be found here!

Spinning Platters Interview: Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go’s and The Bluebonnets

There aren’t many artists out there that can stake the claim that they are having a “big” 2020. However, Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go’s is having one of the biggest years of her career! Earlier this spring she released her first book, an autobiography of her early years, leading up to the Go-Go’s mid-’90s reunion, All I Ever Wanted. In addition to the book, she released a solo record to accompany the book, also called All I Ever Wanted, providing a soundtrack to that book. This Friday, July 31st brings us the first new single by the Go-Go’s since 2001, “Club Zero.” Once you have given the new single a few dozen spins, that very same night brings us the premiere of the Go-Go’s on Showtime, a documentary film about the life and times of the most successful all female rock band of all time at 9/8c!

Vinyl Reissue Spotlight: Rilo Kiley by Rilo Kiley

I went to a show in college at Cafe du Nord in the early 2000’s. Specifically, it was October 10th, 2002. I recall it vividly, because for some reason I had a lot of cash on me at the show, and a woman I had a crush on was there. A little band called Rilo Kiley were headlining, and I had already fallen hard for this band based on a prior appearance at this venue opening for The Mountain Goats. Anyways, the girl I had a crush on was their for a support band… Someone called Arlo. She asked me about Rilo Kiley, and I described them as “guitar-heavy indie rock with a subtle hint of twang.” This was enough to convince her to stay for the headliner. (YES!) She fell for the band much like I had. At the end of the night, I went to the merch table and bought double of everything they’ve released thus far: their self titled debut EP (which on some pressings was referred to as The Initial Friend EP, but not this one), Take-Offs and Landings, and The Execution Of All Things. I gave her one copy of everything, and I kept the other copy. I also gave her my scarf, because it was cold and she lost her’s. Sadly, I never officially asked this woman out on a date. Also, sadly, about two years later, I fell on hard times financially about a year or so later, and sold a lot of CDs. By this time Rilo Kiley had signed to a major and were getting big, and that first EP had fallen out of print, so I sold it, because it had value to it. Also, if I had known lead singer Jenny Lewis would become massive one day, I would’ve held onto it a little longer. 

I’ve regretted both not selling that CD and not asking that woman out for years. Luckily, I married a different, wonderful woman, and we had the Rio Kiley song “More Adventurous” play as we walked down the aisle at our wedding. Also lucky for me, that record that I so sadly miss from many years ago is FINALLY seeing the light of day again! It is coming out on Little Record Company on October 2nd, and can be preordered here as a colored, gatefold vinyl release, or, if you dislike having “things,” you can also get it digitally! And, just for fun, our writer Joel Edelman got to interview Rilo Kiley in 2002 for Agouti Music! Single Of The Week: NOTDF by Le Fomo

This week’s single of the week comes from Le Fomo, and it’s extra special, because it tells a story about one of my favorite venues in San Francisco, El Rio! This is the story of, well, a nipple falling out of someone’s outfit while dancing. An experience that we’ve all experienced at some point. (For me, it was at The Sonics show at The New Parish, and the crowd was so raucous that my shirt ripped open. Apologies to the rest of that audience.) It’s a fun little disco number, perfect for reminiscing about El Rio and all the wonderful daytime dance parties with delicious fry bread being served up in the backyard, the intense punk shows in the side room, or all of the trouble you got into in college during their legendary $1 drink nights, only to be saved by Tamale Lady’s midnight arrival. (RIP Tamale Lady)
