Single of the Week: “Late to The Party” by Orla Gartland ft Declan McKenna

I am often SHOCKED when I catch an artist selling out an entire US tour without me knowing much about them. I feel like I’m “Late to The Party,” if you will. My day job is in event ticketing, and it seems that every club I work with was shocked by how quickly these Orla Gartland shows sold out, and I finally see why. This song rips? Gartland pulls from the classic 90’s Britpop in both warmth and humor and is also pretty ferocious. For those eagerly awaiting the second Wet Leg record, at minimum, Gartland can help tide you over until then.

“Late To The Party” is the latest single off Orla Gartland’s sophomore record, Everybody Needs A Hero, in stores and streaming on October 5th. You may prepare for this record’s arrival however you please here. And sorry if you were hoping to see her this Fall, as all 13 North American shows are SOLD OUT

Single of the Week: “Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter

I did not have “Becoming a Sabrina Carpenter Superfan” on my bingo card for 2024. Mostly because I didn’t know anything about her in 2023 and didn’t initially like “Espresso.” Then “Please Please Please” happened. Then Outside Lands happened. And now I’m smitten with her snarky blend of disco and country that feels so utterly timeless. “Taste” is, at its heart, a brilliant send-up of the “woman done wrong” country song. It would be “Jolene” if Jolene didn’t decide she was the victim. And the video is brilliant, too.

“Taste” is the latest single from Sabrina’s 5th (Yes. 5th) record, Short n’ Sweet, in stores and streaming TODAY. You can experience the magic I felt at Outside Lands this fall on tour: Continue reading “Single of the Week: “Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter”

Single of the Week: “As Above So Below” by Fievel is Glauque

Nice things can be happy, right? Nice things that take you on a sonic journey are still a joy by the time it’s over, only in a different place? SO GOOD!!! Fievel Is Glauque is a Stereolab-esque fusion of lounge, psych, and pop, with the bonus of live horns that are just plain perfect. “As Above So Below” is a fantastic pop number for a sunny, late Summer weekend.

“As Above So Below” is the first single from Rong Weicknes, due out on Fat Possum Records on October 25th. Prepare for it’s release accordingly

Single of the Week: “Bright Lights” by The Killers

I am currently in a bit of a frenzy, gathering my things for the day for Outside Lands and realizing that it’s been a whole 16 years since I last saw The Killers live. In that time, they’ve become the legacy act they’ve always aimed to be, bridging together generations and influencing a sea of young acts. I was getting ready for an evening of nostalgia-fueled hits, only to find… A new single? Do I dare listen? What if I hate it? And surprisingly, not only does it not sound like the band that created Hot Fuss, but it’s warm and big, and I kinda love it.

“Bright Lights” is available in all the usual places. Tonight, they are headlining Outside Lands before returning home to Vegas for a monthlong residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace

Single Of The Week: “IDK WTD” by Human Touch

Oh, man! This was such a lovely surprise this morning to see that Natalia Rogovin’s Human Touch project is back! “IDK WTD” is such a blissful lofi synth gem that has dramatically lifted my spirits today. This song is just plain perfect- it’s warm, it’s catchy, and it moves in several different directions. Rogovin is singing in a different register than she did with her band Social Studies, allowing her to bring out a different emotional range. And I know you’ll hear it, but I’m a sucker for the perfect “crack” in a song, and her voice cracks in a way that simply sends my heart aflutter.

I’m hoping this is a sign of more to come. “IDK WTD” is available everywhere. Keep an eye out on Human Touch’s Instagram page for more (I hope).

Single of the Week: “AYAYAY” by Noga Erez featuring Dillom

Some weeks the Single Of The Week can be a really easy decision. And other weeks, I’m digging through tracks, waiting for the thing that pulls me in. This week was actually a bit of the latter. Then I stumbled over a name that I’d seen a lot and ignored: Noga Erez. I guess it was finally my time because “AYAYAY” was the thing that I needed to re-energize my day. It’s a blend of Reggaeton, Cumbia, and Middle Eastern beats combined with Erez’s impressive mic Spanglish mic skills, with the Dillom cameo coming in tastefully, just adding some color to the song without overwhelming it. I get how she landed the Missy Elliott seal of approval.

“AYAYAY” is available in all the usual places. Her next album, The Vandalist, is ready to pick up your Fall doldrums on September 20th. Preorders and presaves are happening now

Single of the Week: “All In My Head” by the Linda Lindas

The other night, I was in a late-night Lyft coming home from the train station after *finally* seeing The Rolling Stones. (It was great. Nope, I’m not writing a full review.) I have a young child, and the driver has an adolescent child. We talked at length about how tough the transition from kid to adolescent is for parents. The next morning I opened up my email to find “All In My Head” by the Linda Lindas and it perfectly encapsulates the anxiety and stress of life when everything inside you and outside of you is changing. Coincidentally, they debuted this song opening for The Stones in LA a few days before!

All In My Head” comes from The Linda Lindas’ upcoming album, No Obligation, on Epitaph Records, out October 11th. They are spending the Summer on tour with Green Day and Rancid and snuck in a gig at 924 Gilman that sold out in 30 seconds flat, so if anyone has an in for tickets, please let me know.

Single of the Week: “Joyride” by Kesha

Kesha’s new single, “Joyride,” is a pure celebration, a dance party anthem that takes us back to the early 2010s with a little extra modern edge. With what Kesha has been through with her lawsuit against former producer Dr Luke and then his defamation countersuit, it has felt like Kesha’s music career has had to take a backseat to the drama. But if you have been paying attention, you know she has been writing songs and experimenting with her music, awaiting the day she would be free from her 6 album deal with Dr Luke’s Kemosabe Records (part of RCA), and that time is now!

Released on July 4th on her own new label, Kesha Records, this is more than a song; it is a joyful scream of independence and freedom. It is a party song for those who give no fucks. Clearly, Kesha has been honing her songwriting craft and saving the best for herself. I can’t wait to see what is coming next.

Single of the Week: “Big Man” by Self Esteem & Moonchild Sanelly

Self Esteem one half of the great UK duo Slow Club, and has been putting out witty, inventive pop tracks for the better part of the last decade. Moonchild Sanelly is an inventive genius from South Africa. The one thing these two have in common? Nobody knows them in the US. That’s our loss, of course. But this song might be the thing that fixes that? It’s a genuinely sweet song about appreciating a solid partner that also isn’t too saccharine. I kinda love it.

“Big Man” is currently available in all the usual places. Can we expected more form both Sanelly and Self Esteem? I certainly hope so.

Single of the Week: “Cause Of Death” by Fake Fruit

I LOVE Fake Fruit. They really are the best Bay Area band of the moment, and they simply keep getting BETTER. “Cause Of Death” is a killer little post-punk tune driven by one of the most interesting sax tones I’ve ever heard. And that video is a captivating piece of cinema filmed at The Chapel, which might be my favorite place on Earth.

“Cause Of Death” is the third single off Fake Fruit’s upcoming release, Mucho Mistrustcoming your way August 23rd. They will be appearing at Stern Grove on August 4th alongside Alex G and J Boogie. FREE Tickets are up for grabs at 2pm on July 4th and can nabbed here
