Gift Guide For Music Nerds: 10 Quick Questions With Brad Klausen

PJOwl

I first discovered Brad Klausen’s work due to his Big Business poster, and discussed him in my first article about rock poster artists for Spinning Platters without knowing who he was.  It’s a few months and a few poster orders later, and now I breathlessly await each new release from him.  For our ongoing series, the Gift Guide For Music Nerds, I’m suggesting that you go to his site and buy the music nerd in your life some amazing rock posters. So I asked Brad if he would do a quick email interview with us, and his responses blew me away.  They’ll surely do the same for you.

10 Quick Questions with Paul and Storm

Give me dancing robots, and I'm there.
Give me dancing robots, and I'm there.

After their epic performance at this year’s Penny Arcade Expo, the world was breathlessly awaiting Paul and Storm’s next move.  Fortunately, they had already announced this move a couple of days earlier.  What brings them to San Francisco this week is an absolute geek fest called w00tstock, that also features Wil Wheaton, Adam Savage, and “other surprise guests,” most of whom have been announced and are listed at the bottom of this post. I’ll be there, and I strongly recommend picking up a ticket for Tuesday night while you still can.  I spoke with Greg “Storm” DiCostanzo and asked him if he would do an email interview with Spinning Platters when the show got closer, and he graciously agreed to do so.

Spinning Platters: Your most well known song, featured in Rock Band, is “Opening Band.”  What happens to that song when you headline? Continue reading “10 Quick Questions with Paul and Storm”

10 Quick Questions with Gary Houston of Voodoo Catbox

Visit Gary Houston at the TRPS show, for he designed the poster!
Visit Gary Houston at the TRPS show, for he designed the poster!

Gary Houston of Voodoo Catbox has been doing great rock posters for many years now.  The first two rock posters I ever bought were from Voodoo Catbox: a diamond-shaped Foo Fighters than you can see on my wall when you come visit, and a Bad Religion poster made to look like an E.C. Comics cover.  Gary designed the TRPS poster that you may have seen in our sidebar for the last couple of weeks, and I caught up with him this week for an email interview.

10 Quick Questions with Gregg Gordon of GIGART

Just one of many great prints Gregg has done
Just one of many great prints Gregg has done

This weekend brings the TRPS Festival of Rock Posters in Golden Gate Park.  To celebrate, I’ll be going as both a journalist and a customer, bringing back interviews with artists, photos of the proceedings, and more posters to add to my flat file.  To kick off our coverage, I caught up with local artist Gregg Gordon who goes professionally by GIGART.  I first met him at the Ledson Winery when he was walking around with his portfolio, showing off some of his earlier work, and I’ve been following his career ever since.  Thanks to Gregg for answering our questions.

10 Quick Questions with The Postmarks

Postmarks

Last week on our podcast, I mentioned that I am really enjoying The Postmarks, my “favorite Scottish band from Florida.”  It turns out that they are either fans of the Spinning Platters podcast or they search for themselves online, because the next thing I knew, I was emailing them 10 Quick Questions.  I also plan to check them out this Tuesday night the 29th at Hotel Utah, and hope to see you all there.  But first, on to the questions and answers from lead singer Tim Yehezkely:

Spinning Platters:  How would you describe your music to a friend who hasn’t heard you yet? Continue reading “10 Quick Questions with The Postmarks”

10 Quick Questions With Judgement Day

You can't really put Judgement Day in a box
You can't really put Judgement Day in a box

The Bay Area band Judgement Day plays string metal, and play it so well, they deserve to own the domain stringmetal.com, where you’ll find their website. This week, on Friday night, they’re playing a headlining show at 924 Gilman, where you’ll have the opportunity to pick up a copy of Out of the Abyss: Live on Tape, a new 7″ vinyl release from the band.  We caught up with Anton and Lewis Patzner, the violinist and cellist of Judgement Day, and asked them to answer some questions for us.

Spinning Platters:  Explain any struggles you may have describing your band to others. Continue reading “10 Quick Questions With Judgement Day”

I the Mighty play fast and loose with gravity

I the Mighty are a fairly new band, having developed out of a two-man acoustic project called Breakpoint.  Now signed to Bay Area indie label Talking House Records, we caught up with them as they prepared to play what they expect to be their biggest show yet, this Friday night the 21st at Blake’s on Telegraph in Berkeley.  I the Mighty are:

Brent Walsh – vocals/guitar/piano
Ian Pedigo – guitar/vocals
Chris Hinkley – bass/vocals
Blake Dahlinger – drums/percussion

Spinning Platters: You’re a fairly new band. How are you describing yourself to others? Continue reading “10 Quick Questions with I the Mighty”

10 Quick Questions for Hiroshi Narita, Manager of The G3 Lounge

He's consumed by the music...
He's consumed by the music...

Hiroshia Narita is one of the 1st people I ever encountered in San Francisco. I was working at a music store in the financial district of San Francisco, and he was working in the mailroom at Universal Music & Video Distribution. Since my store closed and he was laid off from Universal, we’ve kept in pretty good touch. He’s managed to survive a lot of the changes in the industry, and still manages to work for the art form he cares deeply about. He currently manages the G3 Lounge at 3rd Ave and Geary in San Francisco! He took the time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for you, the reader. 10 Quick Questions For We Be the Echo

Luckily for us, the construction gig didn't work out.
Lucky for us that the construction gig didn't work out.

After seeing We Be the Echo play this last Sunday, I caught up with drummer Ilk after the show and asked him if he’d do 10 Quick Questions with us.  He and guitarist Graeme Nichols answered our questions.  After reading, be sure to clear your schedule for this Friday night and catch the band at the Hemlock in San Francisco as they celebrate the release of the new album.

SP: Tell us a brief history of the band.

Graeme: We’ve been playing in this incarnation for 4-5 years, having emerged from a murky past of hardcore punk, post-rock improv and teenage metal.

Ilk: Our new album “MASKS” (coming out this Friday) is our second full-length, and we’ve also released two EPs. We’ve toured both coasts and the Midwest, and will be in Europe this summer to spread the mayhem worldwide.

SP: Where does the name come from? Continue reading “10 Quick Questions For We Be the Echo”
