Vinyl Reissue Spotlight: Spend The Night and Gold Medal by The Donnas

The Donnas have been on hiatus since 2012. As quickly as they disbanded, their catalog seemed to disappear nearly entirely. Their CDs and records had all quietly fallen out of print, and their Lookout Records-era catalog, which amounted to the bulk of the band’s output, never made it to streaming. Interviews with band members have shown that they really don’t have any interest in looking back on this project, so I started to think this Palo Alto-based hard rock powerhouse was going to remain a memory for the folks that got to experience them during their tenure. SF Sketchfest Review: Fred Armisen: Comedy for Guitar Players but Everyone is Welcome at The Chapel, 1/26/2020

Fred Armisen has come a long way since his days drumming for Trenchmouth. He’s been the bandleader for Late Night with Seth Meyers. He’s drummed for Devo. He had a sketch comedy series with Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein where he took every opportunity he could to show off his musical chops. He’s had success in multiple fake bands on his other show, Documentary Now!. Despite acclaim as an actor and comic, he always seemed most at home as a musician. It came as no surprise when I learned he was doing a stand up special called Stand Up For Drummers, in which he exclusively told drum related jokes. When SF Sketchfest announced that he was branching out to guitarists this year, I decided that it was necessary for my own survival that I attend one of these. Single of the Week: Night Terrors by Diet Cig

It’s been FAR TOO LONG since we’ve heard from Diet Cig! Today is your day to hear your first taste of what they’ve been working on the last three years… “Night Terrors” still features Alex Luciano’s signature passionate tremble in her voice, complimented by not just her on guitar and Noah Bowman on drums, but with fully fleshed out production! We have bass filling out the low end, as well as synth flourishes creating a wash of sound. This is the biggest, boldest single from Diet Cig yet!

UK & US East Coast tour dates were just announced, so if you leave somewhere near the Atlantic Ocean, go buy tickets ASAP. The new single is streamable in all the usual places, and you can purchase it on Bandcamp! Oh, and if you wanna buy a gift for your favorite music blogger, I could totally use a new pillow case.

SF Sketchfest Review: Jamie Loftus: Boss Whom Is Girl, Pianofight, 1/22/2020

SF Sketchfest is full of wonderful things that you might miss under the glow of the celebrity heavy headliner shows. Jamie Loftus’ Boss Whom Is Girl is one of those shows that I almost missed. On a whim, I watched a trailer for the show. Then I went down a YouTube rabbit hole, watching stand up clips of Loftus for the next hour. So, I think this means I wanted to go to this show. Single of the Week: Sandcastles by Cable Ties

It’s very sad that Australia has been in the news for some sad reasons. (And, of course, they still need help. Please donate what you can here!) The other side of Australia is that they are just churning out AMAZING rock n roll these days. This week’s single of the week comes from Melbourne’s Cable Ties. It’s the kind of propulsion driven number that really makes it impossible not to move to it. I can’t wait for these folks to visit the US, because the live show just feels like it would be amazing.

This is the first single off their album Far Enough, which will be available to you on March 27th. Preorders are available on their Bandcamp page RIGHT NOW!

SF Sketchfest Interview: Jodie Sweetin & Celia Behar of Never Thought I’d Say This

Everyone in the universe knows who Jodie Sweetin is. She was Stephanie Tanner on Full House, one of those cultural touchstones that somehow hit everyone of a certain age in the universe. In her twenties she moved on to host Much Music’s Dance Off, Pants Off. Now she does a slew of creative things, including creating a podcast about parenting called Never Thought I’d Say This with her best friend Celia Behar. As a new parent myself, I take great joy in listening to this podcast.

We had the opportunity to talk with Sweetin and Behar ahead of their appearance at Cobb’s this Thursday as part of SF Sketchfest. (Tix are available here) We talked about parenting, the podcast, and even learned a bit about how Macy Gray handles delays in the studio. Yeah, it got a little weird…

Spinning Platters: Thank you for taking a little bit of time out on your Saturday morning to talk to me. You folks are in San Francisco right now. Is that correct? Continue reading “SF Sketchfest Interview: Jodie Sweetin & Celia Behar of Never Thought I’d Say This

SF Sketchfest Review: Maria Bamford & Nori Reed at The Castro Theater, 1/9/2020

All Photos by Pat Mazzera

I’ve known the name “Maria Bamford” for years. I know her face well, and would definitely be able to pick her out in a crowd. I have very close friends that are fans. If somebody asked me if I liked her, the answer would probably be yes. However, I have never actually seen or heard her do stand up before. Not on TV, not on record.I actually didn’t know anything about her stand up style before I headed out to this show. Why did I decide to go to this? I’m not really sure. It just felt like I needed to be there. Continue reading “SF Sketchfest Review: Maria Bamford & Nori Reed at The Castro Theater, 1/9/2020”

Single of the Week: Under The Supermoon by Jenny Lewis and Habib Koite

Jenny Lewis had an insanely productive 2019. I did not expect our first Single Of The Week in 2020 to be a new track from her, but, sure enough, I ended up opening my inbox to a fantastic new track that she did with African musician Habib Koite. It’s a gentle, contemplative number, and one of the most overly political statements she’s made since her record with Nice As Fuck in 2016.

This track is from the forthcoming compilation Let The Rhythm Lead: Haiti Song Summit Vol 1, a collection of songs written and recorded in Haiti, where popular musicians collaborated with locals. This record is due out on January 31st, and pre-saves and pre-orders can be found here!

Spinning Platters Interview: Erinn Hayes of Medical Police

Erinn Hayes was the star of the Adult Swim series Childrens Hospital, and is also the star of it’s upcoming offshoot series, Medical Police. She is coming to town for two SF Sketchfest appearances, first on Thursday, January 9th for a Medical Police panel and preview at Marines’ Memorial Theater, and then Friday, January 10th for an appearance as part of Porchlight at Swedish American Hall. Spinning Platters had the opportunity to have a chat with Hayes ahead of her visit. We discussed living in the Bay Area, our weird rivalry with LA, her time as a doctor on TV, and, most importantly, her work on Bill & Ted Face The Music, the upcoming Bill & Ted sequel. Single Of The Week: Chow Nasty by Lost Puppy Forever

Lost Puppy Forever are a bass/drums punk duo from San Francisco. They dropped their debut EP a few months ago, and I, personally, slept on it. But, it’s never too late to find your favorite new band. “Chow Nasty” is their first single and video, and this song is “thick as fuck” and really gets you in your chest. Don’t understand what that means? Put on some headphones, and play this song really loud. You’ll feel it in the center of your chest.

Noise Pop Fest is coming around the corner, and they are running a contest for bands to play! Go here to vote for your favorite band. And, by favorite band, I mean go vote for Lost Puppy Forever. Contest ends January 14th. And if you really want to support the band, head over to their Bandcamp page to pick up a digital copy of the EP!
