Vinyl Reissue Spotlight: Pylon Box by Pylon

When Corin Tucker, of Sleater-Kinney fame, first brought her solo band to SF to play a show at Great American Music Hall, I had the pleasure of speaking to her after the show. My giddy fan boy heart was aflutter, and all I could think of to ask her was “What should I be listening to?” She had one word for me: Pylon. 

Pylon were an early dance punk band out of Athens, GA. The same scene that gave us REM and The B-52’s. I went to investigate, and was saddened to learn that nothing was in print by this band, so I didn’t get to have the shopping spree that I had hoped for. I did get to dance in my apartment to videos I found on YouTube, however.

So, here’s the good news: Pylon are releasing a 4 LP box set, consisting of Gyrate and Chomp, the two full length records released during the original incarnation of Pylon, plus Extra, a collection of singles, including the song “Cool,” which is just a brilliant song. Rounding out the set is something called The Razz Tape, a collection of early demos. The box set can be preordered here, and comes in basic black and fancy colored vinyl. Gyrate and Chomp will be available as stand alone releases via Vinyl Me Please. All of these releases will be coming out on November 6th, just a few days after my birthday, if you are looking for something to get me. Also coming out on November 6th is Pylon’s “Buzz Blend” coffee, which I’m assuming will get you as jittery and energetic as the music does.
