I’m sitting in a hotel room as my colleagues are getting ready for the day. As for yesterday, well, I saw a lot of great music, and a few bits of really boring music. I won’t talk about the boring stuff much, because I don’t remember it. Here was a few words about the great things I enjoyed yesterday, not including the wonderful BBQ chicken from the amazingly polite people at the Canadian Blast BBQ. (Seriously need to give respect to those folks: not only do they book a great bill and are insanely polite, just like the stereotype)

Spinning Platters Picks Six: European Pop Acts You Should Go See at SXSW 2010
You could go to SXSW and see lots of indie buzz bands from Brooklyn. If that’s your thing, great! As for me, I’ll be running around Austin chasing down the chance to see bands from other countries visit our shores, sometimes for the first time, sometimes for the only time. (I even have a tradition of seeing a band I’ve never heard of, from a country I’ve never been to. Give this one a shot.)
So if you go to Austin, and want to hear the best of pop music from the Old World, make sure to check out these six bands.

Late of the Pier at Popscene, April 16, 2009
It’s been one month since I watched the stage crew for Direct TV’s SXSW Bat Bar single handedly tear apart Late of the Pier, oh, and then watch them get the plug pulled on them after three songs at their day show. Needless to say I was more then ready to watch the real thing after the teasers in Austin.
The crowd is ready and aggressive not to lose their hard earned spot up close to the stage which only stands a few feet taller then us. Sequin covered, they emerge from house right. Smiles to me are a good thing; they are ready and so am I. Continue reading “Late of the Pier at Popscene, April 16, 2009”
Gordon Answers Your SXSW 2009 Questions
I sat down to make a top 5 list of my favorite musical moments from South By Southwest 2009, but as I started putting it together, I thought I’d rather just give my comments in each of a few different categories. Read ahead to see:
- Which band had the best choreography?
- What was the most average performance that suggested a great album?
- What band is most likely to cause an indie music nerd pit to break out?
- Who was my biggest surprise of the festival?
- What band clearly got tired of playing shows and seeing me at them?
- What act caused my fanboy drool reflex to start?
- Which band needs the most practice to go from interesting to awesome?
- Who caused a crowd to go from standoffish to dancing madly?
- Which show that I tried to attend got visited by the fuzz?
Dakin’s SXSW Diary, Part One
SXSW thoughts before the memories fade away…
So, I made the trek to Austin, TX for the South By Southwest Festival for the 2nd year in a row. I am pretty sure that I will be heading down there every year I can for the foreseeable future. I’m going to try to hit up a few words about everything with out looking at notes, but that might prove to be a futile operation. Continue reading “Dakin’s SXSW Diary, Part One”
