Show Review: Blondshell with Hello Mary at Cafe du Nord, 8/4/23

Every great once in a while, an artist comes along that is impossible to shake. I found Blondshell in the most old school of manners- a late-night TV performance. Since then, her self-titled debut record has been in perpetual rotation. Bright Eyes was first introduced to me as the sound of someone inserting their hand into their chest, ripping out their heart, and handing it to you. Blondshell, on record, essentially does just that. I’ve been aching to experience this live show for months at this point.

Vinyl Reissue Spotlight: Rilo Kiley by Rilo Kiley

I went to a show in college at Cafe du Nord in the early 2000’s. Specifically, it was October 10th, 2002. I recall it vividly, because for some reason I had a lot of cash on me at the show, and a woman I had a crush on was there. A little band called Rilo Kiley were headlining, and I had already fallen hard for this band based on a prior appearance at this venue opening for The Mountain Goats. Anyways, the girl I had a crush on was their for a support band… Someone called Arlo. She asked me about Rilo Kiley, and I described them as “guitar-heavy indie rock with a subtle hint of twang.” This was enough to convince her to stay for the headliner. (YES!) She fell for the band much like I had. At the end of the night, I went to the merch table and bought double of everything they’ve released thus far: their self titled debut EP (which on some pressings was referred to as The Initial Friend EP, but not this one), Take-Offs and Landings, and The Execution Of All Things. I gave her one copy of everything, and I kept the other copy. I also gave her my scarf, because it was cold and she lost her’s. Sadly, I never officially asked this woman out on a date. Also, sadly, about two years later, I fell on hard times financially about a year or so later, and sold a lot of CDs. By this time Rilo Kiley had signed to a major and were getting big, and that first EP had fallen out of print, so I sold it, because it had value to it. Also, if I had known lead singer Jenny Lewis would become massive one day, I would’ve held onto it a little longer.

I’ve regretted both not selling that CD and not asking that woman out for years. Luckily, I married a different, wonderful woman, and we had the Rio Kiley song “More Adventurous” play as we walked down the aisle at our wedding. Also lucky for me, that record that I so sadly miss from many years ago is FINALLY seeing the light of day again! It is coming out on Little Record Company on October 2nd, and can be preordered here as a colored, gatefold vinyl release, or, if you dislike having “things,” you can also get it digitally! And, just for fun, our writer Joel Edelman got to interview Rilo Kiley in 2002 for Agouti Music! You can enjoy him musing with the band over the joy of El Farolito and a commitment to Converse shoes here

In the meantime, here’s a couple of videos from the bands’ first release to tide you over til October: Continue reading “Vinyl Reissue Spotlight: Rilo Kiley by Rilo Kiley”

Spinning Platters Interview: Randy Randall of No Age

No Age are one of LA’s finest experimental punk bands, and have been making a great noise for almost 15 years. Guitarist Randy Randall has taken that noise to the next level with his recently released Sound Field Vol 1, a series of sonic experiments inspired by the I-10 freeway. Randall is playing a handful of shows to promote this release, and is dropping by Cafe du Nord in San Francisco for 4/20. Tickets are available here

Spinning Platters recently had a chance to chat with Randy. Here’s what we talked about!

Show Review: Bent Knee, Gatherers at Cafe du Nord, 6/23/18

Cafe du Nord has been back for about a year, and I still hadn’t been to a show there. So, I played a little bit of show roulette. I decided to check out something, anything, just to see what the space has become. Lucky for me, Boston’s Bent Knee was playing the night I decided to drop in. A band I’ve been meaning to check out, too! So, my night has been confirmed. Continue reading “Show Review: Bent Knee, Gatherers at Cafe du Nord, 6/23/18”

Show Review: Stephen Kellogg with Fort Atlantic at Cafe du Nord, 10/23/2013

Stephen Kellogg: simply adorable.
Stephen Kellogg: simply adorable.

Stephen Kellogg is a friend of a friend (or several friends, actually). Even so, I’ve never met him, and though I’ve seen him once or twice, I couldn’t have named a single of his songs… until last night. His newest album, Blunderstone Rookery, came out this summer, and when I heard he was playing Cafe du Nord on a chilly Wednesday night, I couldn’t think of anything else I needed to do. It was about time I finally laid ears on him, and a bonus, too: opening act Fort Atlantic.  It wasn’t hard to find a girlfriend up for some live tunes, and soon we were settled into the dim venue with a plate of their fantastic fried pickles, ready for the night to get rolling. Show Review: Carina Round at The Apple Store and Café du Nord, 5/8/2012

Watch the people get tricked out of time
Watch the people get tricked out of time

If you were fortunate enough to catch the last two waves of touring put upon by Puscifer, the brainchild of one Maynard James Keenan of Tool fame,  you might have caught a glimpse of a sultry and furious siren known as Carina Round, who opened for the art-collective-cum-musical-explosion on every single one of their dates. In addition to kicking off the show and stunning audiences who were unprepared for an opening act that held her own ground and shook the foundations of the theaters she co-occupied, the Wolverhampton, UK-born Carina also lent her rich and sensuous voice to the backup vocal duties of the main act — sometimes taking center stage to lead the musicians around her, while frontman Keenan practiced his customary hiding in the shadows. What you might have missed, however, was the release of Tigermending, her self-produced third record. Nearly half a decade in the making, with guest appearances from musicians as varied as Brian Eno, Billy Corgan, and Dave Stewart, the album is a dense and thunderous exploration of worlds unknown and lingering, decadent thoughts and messages. To express all of the fury and power of this release in a live setting is a daunting task, but tonight at Café du Nord, Carina proved that she was more than up for it.

Show Review: Loney Dear, Harbors at Cafe Du Nord, 11.9.11

All Photos By Carla Deasy

Maybe it’s just me, maybe I’m just getting old, but maybe it’s everyone else who might have thought 9:30pm was too late to start a show, well on a Wednesday anyway.  You’d think someone who has become a critical darling in Sweden, would have had people coming in by the truckload.  Upon arrival, at best the place was maybe half full?  But the education system in Sweden is much better than ours, so my gut is telling me to go with two-fifths full as my official number.  After all accuracy in measurement is the key to successful construction of IKEA furniture.

Show Review: TFDI with Riley Etheridge & Michael Kang at Cafe du Nord, 8/21/2011

A little over two years ago, some friends and I went to see Tony Lucca at the Hotel Utah. He was playing with two dudes we’d never heard of before: Jay Nash and Matt Duke. Matt opened, and before he’d finished the first song all three of us were staring at him, transfixed (and okay, maybe a little surprised as well). Our reactions to Jay were similar, and of course we already knew we loved Tony’s music too. As the tour progressed, it didn’t take them long to realize that their fantastic chemistry shouldn’t go to waste. By the time they reached SPACE in Chicago, they were harmonizing their way through each other’s set lists, two of them flanking the third songwriter as he took center stage. They decided to record a 4-song EP, and somehow the whole project was dubbed “TFDI.” (More on that later.)

Show Review: Jay Nash with Joey Ryan & Kenneth Pattengale at Cafe du Nord, 3/27/2011

The last time I saw Jay Nash live was August of 2009. Truth be told, I was there to see Tony Lucca, and I’d never heard of Jay Nash (or Matt Duke) before! Fast forward to going on two years later, and I’m hooked on this guy’s voice. Since then, the trio has formed the occasional band TFDI, released an EP, and as yet evaded the Bay Area (as a band, anyway). So as you might imagine, I wasn’t going to let a little rain stop me from getting to the Cafe du Nord to see Jay on Sunday night, even if he was without his cohorts! Lucky for me, opening act Milk Carton Kids helped to fill any imaginary void. Continue reading “Show Review: Jay Nash with Joey Ryan & Kenneth Pattengale at Cafe du Nord, 3/27/2011”
