Film Review: “Mufasa: The Lion King”

Mufasa is a princely improvement, but still no match for the original King

The 2019 photorealistic remake of the 1994 classic The Lion King was a global box office sensation, but lacked the joy, energy, and instantly-memorable character portrayals of the original. When Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) announced he’d be directing a follow-up to the 2019 film, the choice seemed a peculiar one for the accomplished filmmaker. Upon watching Mufasa: The Lion King, however, we can clearly see (and feel) that Jenkins cared passionately about the thematic elements of the proposed prequel. Combined with original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and improved character designs, Mufasa: The Lion King is a superior follow-up to the 2019 film, even if it still fails to break new ground in any meaningful way. Film Feature: Carrie and Chris Pick the 2019 Oscars

Film critics Carrie and Chris on who will – and who should – win the 91st Academy Awards

The 91st Academy Awards air this Sunday, February 24th, on ABC at 5:00 pm PST (with the requisite pre-show fashion assessments starting hours before). As they did last year, Spinning Platters film critics Carrie Kahn and Chris Piper share their predictions – and hopes – for the major categories.  Guild awards – often harbingers of Oscars to come – have been all over the map this year, so there may actually be some genuine surprises. Tune in on Sunday to see how things play out, and to find out if we correctly read the minds of Academy voters.

MVFF39 Spotlights: The Eagle Huntress/The Architect/A Late Style of Fire: Larry Levis, American Poet/Love is Thicker Than Water/Moonlight

The 39th Mill Valley Film Festival, showcasing over 200 films from more than 50 countries, opened last Thursday evening, and runs until this Sunday, October 16th. The Festival is screening some titles already garnering Oscar buzz: Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, which opened the Festival (and will open widely this fall), the stunning Manchester by the Sea (which already received deserved acclaim back in January at its Sundance premiere), and Loving, the Jeff Nichols historical drama that closes the Fest.

With a full week to go, there is still plenty of time to head over to Marin to catch some great new films. Below we spotlight five Fest titles you may want to check out.
