Tuesday, July 7th

Dirty Projectors, What’s Up at The Independent, 8 PM

The Dirty Projectors started out as a project in experimental music by Dave Longstreth. As the band’s line up became more realized, their sound also become a bit more cohesive. They bring together elements of reggae and punk rock with a bit of Nels Cline-inspired jazz fusion meltdowns. This show is sold out, pray to the ticket gods.

Wednesday, July 8th

Murder Of Lilies, The Don’ts, Boy Of Static at The Elbo Room, 9 PM

Murder Of Lilies are a local band that I first encountered several years ago at a benefit concert to pay for legal costs of a woman arrested at a protest at the School Of The America’s. They didn’t know the girl, and neither did we, but they knew what was right.  They still support causes that they believe, and are really nice guys. The sound? Imagine if Robert Smith were to write songs for Built To Spill. Good stuff, and worth the $6 cover to keep these guys playing.

Thursday, July 9th

The Old 97’s at The Fillmore, 9 PM

The Old 97’s began as a country-punk band in Texas in 1993. Their first record contains vocals from Exene Cervenka from X, and is pretty aggressive.  Eventually, the band’s records  progressed into a power pop act, in the vein of The Replacements, but the live shows are still very intense. This show is being billed as “An Evening With…” and will include solo sets by every member of the band.

Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Impalers at The Fillmore, 9 PM

Total 90’s skacore reunion show! Time to dig up your plaid blazers, reteach yourself how to skank, and dance to your favorite bands from high school. And, find me a millionaire that will get the Skankin’ Pickle doing shows again!

Satruday, July 11th

Death Cab For Cutie, Andrew Bird, Ra Ra Riot at The Greek Theater, 6:30 PM

Andrew Bird was, once upon a time the violinist for the Squirrel Nut Zippers. While working with the neo-swing hitmakers, he also recorded under the name Ball Of Fire, doing much more melancholy music that retained the 1920’s sound of his main band. After quitting SNZ, he started making music that was much more contemporary sounding, and started experimenting with looping techniques at whatnot to make some very big music with just his voice & violin.  Also playing is Death Cab For Cutie, whose live shows have become increasingly more aggressive over the years, so expect to seriously rock out under the cloudy Berkeley sky.

Stern Grove is one of the most beautiful & acoustically perfect venues on Earth. Joan Baez is one of the most important figures in music history. She is still in fine voice, and writing some of the most inspired music of her career. And it’s FREE!!!

Monday, July 14th

Tortoise, Pit er Pat at The Great American Music Hall, 8 PM

Post-Punk, Jazz Fusion experimentalists Tortoise have one thing going for them other like-minded bands don’t. They keep the groove tight enough to dance to. Enjoy the most intimate show they have played in SF in well over a decade.
