Coeur de Pirate is the nom de plume of French singer/songwriter Beatrice Martin. She’s been putting out great cinematic pop records in her home country for years, and it’s time for her to finally cross over stateside. She’s got an English language record coming out, and she’s ready to explode something fierce. This is one of those “I saw her back when…” shows.

Cheetah Chrome, The Avengers, The Alice Bag Band, Frightwig, The Mutants, The Lewd, Drunk Injuns, Vktms at Verdi Club
The line up is ridiculous on every level. So many bands on this bill whose members I didn’t even think were still alive! This is pretty much the ultimate classic punk fest. I mean, when was the last time Cheetah Chrome played SF?!?!

Missing Persons, Ladyhawke, Pansy Division at Folsom Street Fair
I just find it pretty great that a little street fair that celebrates people getting to be themselves managed to score a band that wrote one of the most universally recognizable songs ever. And anytime I can convince people to see Pansy Division, it’s a good thing.

Titus Andronicus, Spider Bags, Baked at The Chapel
What is Titus Andronicus all about? They are kind of a punk band, but not really. They are everything Bruce Springsteen wishes he could be, but opted to become the biggest star on Earth instead. They do big, rawkus songs with an SAT level vocabulary.

Thievery Corporation at The Fox Theater – Oakland
The vast majority of trip hop was pretty terrible house music done in a minor key. The live performances were all even worse, because they were generally reduced to just a DJ and maybe a singer. Thievery Corporation, however, are an undeniable live force. They put on one of the most elaborate shows I’ve ever seen. It’s a great experience.
