As we recover from our wonderful weekend in Golden Gate Park, dealing with our sunburns (Friday & Saturday) and our hypothermia (Sunday), here’s a few more shows to keep you going. All of them good, or at least have the potential for good.
On a side note: the Bay Bridge is closed this weekend, but BART will be running all night, so if you wanted to get wasted on the other side of the Bay on which you reside, this is the weekend to do it!
Tuesday, September 1st
MDC, Poison Control, Bum City Saints at The Knockout, 10 PM
Multi-Death Corporation. Millions Of Dead Cops. Multiple Dead Children. Millions Of Damn Christians… They have gone by many names in their 30 years as one of the greatest political punk bands ever. Their songs are fast, funny, and intelligent, similar to their peers, The Dead Kennedys. Oh, and this show is free, so no excuses!
Casualties, Krum Bums, Mouth Sewn Shut, Static Thought at Thee Parkside, 8 PM
Wednesday, September 2nd
Al Green, Orgone at The Warfield, 8 PM
Rev. Al Green spent a number of years away from the pop music world, opting to only record religious music, and spent every Sunday working as a minister. In 2003, he released a record called I Can’t Stop. He brought in his original producer Willie Mitchell, and recorded that record using all of the same equipment he used during his mid 60’s heyday. In 2005 he put out a companion record, Everything’s OK, and last year he released Lay It Down, both of which are as good, if- dare I say it- superior to his classic records. His voice is better than ever, and this show is destined to be one for the history books at the Warfield.
Nels Cline Singers, Ava Mendoza at Cafe du Nord, 8:30 PM
Nels Cline is Wilco’s current guitar player. This is an instrumental jazz-fusion project that will, in fact, melt your face off. Also playing 9/3. Two-day tickets are available at a discount.
Mitchell Musso, KSM, Jimmy Robbins at Slim’s, 7 PM
Thursday, September 3rd
Mos Def and Erykah Badu featuring The Cannabinoids, Jay Electronica at Davies Symphony Hall, 7:30 PM
Erykah Badu is one of the greatest performers ever. Mos Def is one of the few rappers that consistently keeps it up live. This two of them together can only breed magic. (Also appearing 9/4 at The Paramount Theater in Oakland)
Jucifer, Grayceon, Flood at Annie’s Social Club, 9 PM
Friday, September 4th
Tinted Windows, Magic Christian at Great American Music Hall, 9 PM
Taylor Hanson, James Iha, Bun E Carlos, Adam Schlesinger. All very famous in their own right. All very talented musicians. Put them together, and you get this delightful power-pop group that is everything the Jonas Brothers would love to be. Pitch-perfect harmonies! Songs about adolescent hormonal despair! Power Chords! Oh yeah, and A nice bit of Taylor Hanson’s package:
Wallpaper, Battlehooch, Somehow At Sea, Suicidal Barfly at The Uptown Nightclub, 9 PM (Free! And $2 Pabst from 6-9)
Saturday, September 5th
Jucifer, The Ferocious Few, Sassy at The Uptown Nightclub, 9 PM
The Ferocious Few are proof that if you work really hard, people will follow. These guys play blistering amplified acoustic punk rock, and they are most often seen playing along the Embarcadero, or in the parking lot of the Church Street Safeway. This is a rare moment to see them in a club, and they are just as pure and raw in this setting as they are on the streets. Please support your local, hard working talent and check this show out.
Wire Train, Translator, Debora Iyall & Benjamin Bossi (Of Romeo Void) at Slim’s, 8 PM
Sunday, Septemeber 6th
Wavves, Ganglians at The Rickshaw Stop, 8 PM
I recommend this show very highly, but I am not going to tell you why, I think you should just watch this clip, and you will understand what kind of things could happen:
John Legend, India.Arie, Vaughn Anthony at The Greek Theater, 7:30 PM
Monday, September 7th
Little Cow, La Plebe, Go Van Gough at Cafe du Nord, 8 PM
Little Cow are from Hungary, and are part of the gypsy-punk movement. Imagine if Devotchka & They Might Be Giants did a record together. That’s what we have here.
Yay! Red pants! *swoon*
If I were in town, I’d be going to Mew on Friday night, but Tinted Windows will be a fun choice, too.
Mitchell Musso Woo!
whats the bay bridge?
John Legend! ( just wanted to throw something in there)
I want to see Mew! and that is one of the best pictures ever!!!!
