It’s another week of greatness for your week… Enjoy!
Tuesday, August 18th
Emiliana Torrini, Anya Marina at Great American Music Hall, 8 PM
Iceland is the home of some of the greatest musicians of all time. In fact, so much greatness comes out of there, that a lot of artists tend to get overlooked. Emiliana Torrini is one of them. Her voice is similar to Bjork’s, but she much more accessible. Well, just see for yourself:
Pissed Jeans, Mi Ami, Hissing Wound at Bottom Of The Hill, 9 PM
Green Day, Franz Ferdinand at HP Pavilion, 7:30 PM
Wednesday, August 19th
Partyline, Awsomes, Shebeast, Shwule, El Rio, 7 PM
Allison Wolfe was the lead vocalist of riot-grrl trailblazers Bratmobile. She moved to DC and started Partyline, which takes political lyrics and perky garage rock of her earlier band, and adds a bit of disco to the mix. She also is one of greatest front-people in the history of punk rock, and except the small stage at El Rio to barely contain her.
Pxndx at The Fillmore, 8 PM
Thursday, August 20th
Warped Tour at Shoreline, 2 pm
Please Go To Crabcore.com. Then go see Attack Attack! at Warped Tour. Then die happy.
Strip Mall Architecture, The Love X Nowhere, Silian Rail at Cafe du Nord, 9 PM
Friday, August 21st
Patty Smyth & Scandal at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, 6:30 & 8:30 PM
A lot of reunions this year. And none of them are getting as little press as the original Scandal playing. Which is a bit of a bummer, because this show is going to be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! My favorite pop-metal bands of the 80’s, and any band on the beach is great.
Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, Savannah Jo Lack at The Independent, 8 PM
Saturday, August 22nd
Jay Reatard at Amoeba Music SF, 6 PM
Crazy, crazy music. All for free, because he’s doing a tour of record stores. This show will rip Amoeba to shreds. SHREDS!!!! (Also Sunday, 6 PM at Amoeba Berkeley)
Flipper, Triclops!, Turk, Alaric (+ Punk Rock & Shlock Karaoke in the Backroom) at Annie’s Social Club, 8 PM
Sunday, August 23rd
The Matches, Dizzy Balloon, Judgement Day at The Fillmore, 8 PM
Tonight, we bid farewell to a bay area institution. The Matches may not have been the best pop-punk band to come out of our homestead, but they may have been the most persistent. They did their time of various different package tours, filmed the videos, gave face time to the fans, went around to radio stations in an attempt to get played- the whole nine yards, but they never became breakout stars like Green Day or AFI. Sure, they did have the minor hit on Fuse, but I believe this show is the end result of never quite breaking in to the mainstream. Dance your last pogo tonight!
The Cult, Year Long Disaster at The Warfield, 8 PM
J. Tillman (Fleet Foxes), Moore Brothers, Pearly Gate Music at Cafe du Nord, 8 PM
Monday, August 24th
Pete Yorn, Juliette Commagere, JD King at The Fillmore, 8 PM
The Matches broke up?
Well, they will after Saturday…
regards your comments on the Matches –
“never quite breaking in to the mainstream”
– true, sadly. though they worked harder than any band since the Beatles.
“may not have been the best pop-punk band to come out of our homestead”
– untrue. As good as the great Green Day, quality-of-songs-and-performance-wise. (and, obviously, leagues above AFI)
