I love going to see classic soul shows at Yoshi’s. The crowds are always incredibly excited about the gig, and you always come out realizing that you were more familiar with the group than you thought. This is one of those shows.

This is the closest thing you are going to get to seeing Skankin’ Pickle, one of the greatest bands in the history of Bay Area rock, reunite. Lead singer Mike Park had distanced himself from the ska / punk / metal / funk / reggae fusion act in recent years, however, he’s back doing this kind of music.

The Rentals, Ozma at Slim’s
Out of practically nowhere, Matt Sharp, formerly of Weezer, resurrected his band The Rentals, put together a crazy supergroup made from members of Lucius, The Black Keys, and Ozma, and then released one of the best records of the year.

Swans, Carla Bozulich at The Independent
Legendary experimental rock band Swans have been bubbling underneath everyone’s radar for decades. However, with their recent release To Be Kind, they have created their most unexpected work- a truly accessible piece of work that doesn’t sacrifice creativity or edge. It was a genius move to bring in Annie Clark (aka St Vincent) to lend her art pop chops to several tracks on this release. Ms Clark won’t be there, but Geraldine Fibbers’ Carla Bozulich will be there, and she’s kind of a living legend herself.
