Peaches, Maluca at Mezzanine

At one point in time, “electroclash” was going to change the world… It was going to change the way we listen to music- twitchy beats, vulgar lyrics, and a punky, lo-fi sound. That lasted a few years, and like many electronic sub genres that disappear after a few years, there is always the one artist that was bigger than the genre. Peaches is that artist, and she has managed to stuck around by reinventing her sound and style, and not sticking to a single genre. She has toured in a while, but she’s taking a quick tour around the states to play some of her favorite records for the good people of our fair nation. I have no idea what to expect from this show, but expect to be unexpected.

Japandroids, Bass Drum Of Death at Hemlock Tavern

Before every hearing a single note of this band, they were simply setting up their gear for a gig at SXSW. The guitar player plugged in and started playing. The sound guy yelled over the PA: “Turn it down. That’s loud as fuck!” To the guitarist’s response “IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE LOUD AS FUCK!” In a nutshell, that’s what kind of band Japandroids is.

Archers Of Loaf, Philistines at Great American Music Hall

I missed a lot of the great 90’s slacker rock. It may have been the fact that I was a little too young to really appreciate it, and despite the fact that I can’t really get into Pavement, a lot of the other bands from that era of been finding their way onto my iPod. I really didn’t know much about Archers Of Loaf until a few months ago, when the internet exploded over this reunion. Now that’ I’ve spent some time with them, I know that this show will be pretty awesome. Opening act Philistines aren’t half bad, either.

mc frontalot, Brandon Patton, Mike Lombardo at Cafe du Nord

Yeah, I’m still totally cool with the nerdcore. Let it be. I’m happy that Childish Gambino is getting big, because I think he can make this nerdcore thing mainstream, and maybe the originals like mc frontalot can get the respect they deserve.

Olivia Tremor Control, The Music Tapes at Great American Music Hall

The American South in the late 80’s and early 90’s was rich with some of the most inventive underground rock music in the history of the genre. The music coming from Athens, GA and Chapel Hill, NC was astounding, and one of the finer acts from that scene is taking a loop around America to remind us for great they are. This is going to be a very, very special show.

Seriously, it’s impossible to not enjoy Cuban music. Especially when the lead is a flutist.

Wednesday, September 7th

Givers, Kopecky Family Band at Rickshaw Stop

This bubbly dance pop band is one of the latest to sign to Glassnote Records, the little indie label that seems to only know how to produce rock stars. Givers, with their infectious brand of pop punk and afrobeat are full of awesome energy, and this show will definitely be a solid aerobic work out.

Hanson, Meiko at The Regency Ballroom

Hanson, too? This is a brilliant night for bouncy pop rock in the bay… If one of these two shows sells out on you, you should go to the other. These venues are only like a 10 minute walk apart.
