The final week before Outside Lands, and we have a whole lot on our docket. We’ve got no less than 8 bona fide rock legends coming to town, as well as 3 of SpinningPlatters’ all time favorite acts. Consider this your warm up for Golden Gate Park.
Thursday, August 2nd
Tears For Fears, Carina Round at Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium
One of my earliest memories is of the film Real Genius. I won’t give away the ending if you haven’t seen it, but the closing scene features the song “Everybody Rules The World” by Tears For Fears. It might be one of the finest songs ever written. Opening the show is Carina Round, part time Puscifer collaborator and a fantastic musician in her own right.
John Fogerty at Mountain Winery – Saratoga
Friday, August 3rd
Comedy Bang! Bang! Live! w/ Scott Aukerman, Paul F Thomkins, James Adomian, and Kurt Braunholer at Herbst Theater
Scott Aukerman has been floating around behind the scenes as a comedy writer for quite some time now, starting out as a staff writer for Mr Show. In the last few years, however, he’s been doing a podcast called Comedy Bang! Bang!, which, in my opinion is one of the funniest and most creative podcasts on the internet. He’s taking the show on the road, if it’s half as good as the podcast or the TV show, it will be the most entertaining show in town.
Iron Maiden, Coheed & Cambria at Shoreline Amphitheater
Zion I, DJ Vin Rock at Oaklandish
Soul Asylum, Trapper Schoepp & The Shades, Cosmic Suckerpunch at The Independent
Saturday, August 4th
Jay Brannan, Chris Pureka at Great American Music Hall
On record, Jay Brannan is a great songwriter with a stunning voice. Live, he is a one man show that is epically entertaining. His banter is genuine and hysterical, and has a fantastic rapport with his avid fanbase.
The English Beat, The Champions Inc at Bimbo’s 365 Club
Sunday, August 5th
Ozomatli, Smod at Stern Grove
At one point in time, I called Ozomatli the greatest live band on Earth. I’ve seen a lot of bands in my day, and, well, they are, still, the greatest live band on Earth. Their delicious fusion of hip hop, latin rock, funk, ska, meringue, and, well everything else, always evolves into the best party you will ever go to.
Murder By Death, Ha Ha Tonka at Bottom Of The Hill
Monday, August 6th
Chris Isaak, Shawn Colvin at Mountain Winery – Saratoga
Tuesday, August 7th
Foxygen, No, Dylan Shearer at Brick & Mortar Music Hall
Foxygen are getting an insane amount of hype, and this is the first time they are coming to SF. Which means, this is the bragging rights show. You can be the first of your friends to see this awesome psych duo live!
Fang Island, Zechs Marquise at Great American Music Hall
Neil Diamond at HP Pavilion
Wednesday, August 8th
Redd Kross, The Mantles, Warm Soda at Great American Music Hall
Another band from the “I never thought that I’d get the chance to see these guys” file. Redd Kross were the band to bridge the gap between the alternative rock era and the Warped Tour/pop punk era. This is going to be one of the first reunion gigs, so I really don’t what these shows are going to be like, but with songs like this, there’s little chance for this to go wrong.
Religious Girls, Aan, French Cassettes at Cafe du Nord
