The last week of July is looking pretty crazy… Tons of amazing shows going on this week, including two very rare 4-band shows that are worth arriving early and staying late. Time to buy some Red Bull!
Thursday, July 22nd
Sick Of It All, Trash Talk, 50 Lions, Alpha & Omega at Slim’s
Long ago, I saw Sick Of It All open for Slayer. The pulled of the riskiest of fetes: Actively mocking Slayer fans without them realizing it. These are consistently funny, fierce, and all around a great live set.
Maus Haus (DJ Set), Skeletal System, Psychic Handbook, Rangers at Milk
Friday, July 23rd
Toad The Wet Sprocket, Hey Marseilles at The Fillmore
Hey Marseilles are a ridiculously good band that borrows from the same prog/folk/pop/indie playbook that The Decemberists use, while not sounding like them at all. Toad The Wet Sprocket are named after a Monty Python sketch, and don’t quite know how to be “broken up.” Tonight at the Fillmore, both of these bands will be awesome, and you should go.
Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Joe Bagale, Crystal Monee Hall at Great American Music Hall
Saturday, July 24th
Robyn, Kelis, Dan Black, Far East Movement at Mezzanine
Sometimes you get a bill that’s too amazing for words. This is one of them. It’s so big, they had to slip in a 2nd night
Emeralds, Wildlife, Didimao at 21 Grand
Sunday, July 25th
All Shook Down Festival in North Beach
Every amazing local band is playing this show, and then you have the amazing Janelle Monae on the bill as well. Seriously, the best thing in town this weekend.
Queensryche Cabaret at The Regency Ballroom
Monday, July 26th
Blank Tapes, Graves, Range Of Light Wilderness, Some Say Leland at Mama Buzz Cafe
Exactly the kind of music you would like to hear on a hot summer evening in Downtown Oakland, sipping on an iced soy latte and shaking your booty ever so gently.
Bear In Heaven, Twin Sisters, Beach Fossils at Rickshaw Stop
Tuesday, July 27th
The Stationary Set, The Shivers, Kelli Scarr, Peter and The Wolf at Hotel Utah
Kelli Scarr has one of the most stunning voices that I have ever heard, and has created one of the most powerful records I have ever heard. That’s all I have to say about this.
The Delta Mirror, Borneo, Here Come The Saviours at Rickshaw Stop
Wednesday, July 28th
Pocahaunted, Mi Ami, Late Young, Peaking Lights at Rickshaw Stop
Another bill too good to talk about:
Morcheeba, The Mumlers at The Fillmore
