Here’s another sampling of the fine music out your disposal in the Bay Area this weekend! I think that there’s something for everyone this week.
Thursday, July 19th
Ray Davies, The 88 at The Fillmore
The Kinks might have been the most influential band in rock. Sure, The Beatles were popular. But The Kinks created the genre known as “Riff Rock.” All garage rock, punk rock, power pop, heavy metal, pretty much any “rock” sub genre comes out of The Kinks. Of course, since the Davies brothers will never play together again, we only get solo shows. The 88 are an American garage rock band that has been backing Davies for the last few years, but they do a fantastic job at re-creating that 60’s rock magic. And the chance to see any 60’s icon at The Fillmore is a something that you’ve got to do!
Beachwood Sparks, Allah-Lahs, Sweet Chariot at The Independent
Friday, July 20th
The Meteors, Stellar Corpses, Custom Kicks at The Uptown
This UK band formed in 1980, and are commonly credited as the first “psychobilly” band. Although that is arguable, they definitely defined the genre. You also can’t pretend that these guys come to town every day. Or even every year.
Grass Widow, American Splits, Wax Idols, The World’s Longest Guitar Solo With Breaks at Rickshaw Stop
Aziz Ansari at Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium
Saturday, July 21st
The Fresh & Only’s, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Gardens & Villa, Dominant Legs, La Sera, Sea Of Bees, Mwahaha at Potrero del Sol
Our friends and blog cousins The Bay Bridged are on their second year of their incredibly reasonably priced Music & Food Festival at the criminally under used Potrero del Sol Park. The line up is solid, too, being spearheaded by local indie rock heroes The Fresh & Only’s. So, if you have an extra $7 and a free Saturday afternoon, soak up some sun and some rock & roll with the best musical festival bargain this summer!
Sonny & The Sunsets, Wet Illustrated, Cool Ghouls, Pink Films at The Independent
Sunday, July 22nd
Sublime with Rome, Cypress Hill, Pepper, HB Surround Sound at The Greek Theater – UC Berkeley
Guilty pleasure? Just another 90’s package tour? Perhaps. But, will this show make your inner teenage stoner as happy as a clam? Yes it will. I say, forget about your indie cred. It’s time to enjoy all of your favorite songs that you pretend aren’t on your iPod.
Leo Kottke at Yoshis – Oakland
Monday, July 23rd
Reel Big Fish, Big D & The Kids Table, Suburban Legend, The Maxies at The Regency Ballroom
Yes, we get Sublime on Sunday and Reel Big Fish on Monday. It’s a shame Save Ferris isn’t playing on Tuesday, isn’t it?
Religious Girls, Young Lions, Hides at Bottom Of The Hill
Wednesday, July 25th
Spoek Mathambo, Duckwrth, Armani Cooper at Brick & Mortar Music Hall
When you think of South African hip hop, you really shouldn’t be thinking Die Antwoord. Those guys are great, but these guys with their fusion of afrobeat rhythms, dark new wave, and excellent mic skills are, over all, one of the best live bands around. I saw them twice at SXSW this year, and I simply can’t get enough of them!
Kelly Clarkson, The Fray, Carolina Liar at Sleep Train Pavilion
