Ray Davies, The 88 at The Fillmore
The Kinks might have been the most influential band in rock. Sure, The Beatles were popular. But The Kinks created the genre known as “Riff Rock.” All garage rock, punk rock, power pop, heavy metal, pretty much any “rock” sub genre comes out of The Kinks. Of course, since the Davies brothers will never play together again, we only get solo shows. The 88 are an American garage rock band that has been backing Davies for the last few years, but they do a fantastic job at re-creating that 60’s rock magic. And the chance to see any 60’s icon at The Fillmore is a something that you’ve got to do!

The Meteors, Stellar Corpses, Custom Kicks at The Uptown
This UK band formed in 1980, and are commonly credited as the first “psychobilly” band. Although that is arguable, they definitely defined the genre. You also can’t pretend that these guys come to town every day. Or even every year.

Our friends and blog cousins The Bay Bridged are on their second year of their incredibly reasonably priced Music & Food Festival at the criminally under used Potrero del Sol Park. The line up is solid, too, being spearheaded by local indie rock heroes The Fresh & Only’s. So, if you have an extra $7 and a free Saturday afternoon, soak up some sun and some rock & roll with the best musical festival bargain this summer!

Spoek Mathambo, Duckwrth, Armani Cooper at Brick & Mortar Music Hall
When you think of South African hip hop, you really shouldn’t be thinking Die Antwoord. Those guys are great, but these guys with their fusion of afrobeat rhythms, dark new wave, and excellent mic skills are, over all, one of the best live bands around. I saw them twice at SXSW this year, and I simply can’t get enough of them!
